Today we’d like to introduce you to Space Widows.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We are Space Widows from Los Angeles. We originated here and came together through our passion for music, honestly. Space Widows used to just be Space Widow, with music from black widow chick when she was solo, but then became a full band after meeting Miguel (drummer) on Craiglist. (Luckily, no one has been chopped up and eaten yet.) Then, after writing and working together for some time, Tony (Miguel’s brother) joined. Last, Nikki (bass player) joined. We are really just a bunch of idiots who share the same vision, which is to produce music we like, hoping others will, too. We each love what we do and contribute to our songs equally. We feel very lucky to be such great friends, and even that feels like an understatement. We’re super grateful to have people interested in our music and support us the way they do. It definitely pushes us to be better and humbles us down when we need it. If you love Hot Cheetos, you’ll love us.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been as smooth as the bumpy roads of TJ. All jokes aside, it definitely has not always been smooth. Space Widows had some hiatuses and other in-between members that didn’t work out. We, at times, felt like investing so much time away from our jobs, family, kids, etc., for space widows might not even be worth it. Ultimately, we stopped whining and kept going. If we hadn’t, we definitely wouldn’t be where we are today. Finally, getting recognition and good shows with incredible lineups made all the BS and setbacks worth it.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We are an Indie rock band by classification, although we don’t really like to classify ourselves because we write songs that are so vastly different from each other. We write original songs about our life. Raw stuff, depressing stuff, happy stuff, silly stuff. We are known for our catchy melodies, style of songwriting, and our singer’s strong voice. Man, where to start? We are most proud of our determination and drive (as well as our Pitbull Jenny; she’s a good girl. She gets snacks during practice.) We try to think outside the box and catch the listeners off guard, with a focus on quality versus quantity.
What does success mean to you?
Even if only one person enjoys what we do, it’s a win.
