Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherrie G.
Hi Sherrie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been into photography for as long as I can remember but only really started pursuing it when I first moved to Los Angeles in 2017. I was working shitty retail jobs back home in New York City and felt kind of lost — I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my life and felt like I was living for the approval of others and not for myself. So when I moved to LA, I wanted a fresh start— to simplify my life and just do what made me happy. I started by taking photos of my friends, scouting people on Instagram and just putting myself out there; at the time, it felt so daunting and intimidating (and sometimes still does) to put myself out there, but I quickly learned that more often than not it is worth it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been anything but a smooth road lol— I really struggled in the beginning with so many things; for one, I didn’t know one thing about shooting film. I had no job at the time so I couldn’t exactly fund my projects, I had zero connections so it was super challenging to find people that were down to shoot with me when I had little to no work to show for. I still have my struggles and some days are harder than others — I think every creative person can relate to that. But every adversity I’ve faced has instilled that much more tenacity in me to figure it out.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a photographer, and I specialize in film photography. I wouldn’t say I am known, but if I were to be known for anything I’d like to be known for shooting portraits that capture people’s truest essence — meaning that my subject’s felt comfortable enough to be whoever they wanted to be in that moment. Personally, I’m proud of how much I’ve learned and how much progress I’ve made as an artist and human being since I moved to Los Angeles nearly four years ago. I think I have a knack for seeing potential in people — I can look at someone and know if they’ll be good in front of the camera or not; one of my favorite things in life is seeing potential in somebody and helping them see that potential in themselves.
What makes you happy?
Music makes me the happiest, I think. It’s the one thing that can instantly shift my mood if I’m having an off day. And I love that it brings people together… I really bond with people through music.
