Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharon Wu.
Hi Sharon, thanks for joining us today. Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. You can include as little or as much detail as you’d like
Ever since I was little, my mom got me into a routine of reading and journaling every night. It stuck with me, and I ended up being pretty good at writing all through school.
After graduating from the University of California, San Diego with my BA in Communications, a modeling agency offered me a contract. At the time, I was dying to experience the “model life.” And so I did — walking runways and gracing billboards in LA. I loved that this chapter allowed me to nurture my love for fashion and beauty.
One day, my brother suggested I start a lifestyle blog to document it all. He helped me set up a WordPress site and the rest was history. I published posts about my favorite beauty finds, outfits of the day, and whatever else I was into.
It was purely for fun until brands like Marshalls, COVERGIRL, and American Express hired me to create content for their marketing campaigns… talk about living the dream!
While running my blog, I also freelance wrote on the side about things like higher education, home security, and senior living for a digital marketing agency. That gig lasted for a few years until the agency was bought out.
Then… the global pandemic happened and changed everything. My blog sponsors were cutting budgets. Everyone seemed to be moving toward video content, which isn’t my forte. So, I switched gears and started offering blog writing services focused on SEO.
Today, I write articles and guides directly for brands, publications, and founders. When I’m not writing, I’m mentoring new solopreneurs — giving them the clarity, guidance, and accountability they need to make money doing what they love. After 10+ years of highs and lows, I love the idea of helping new freelancers “shorten the learning curve” however I can.

Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Far from it. But then again, the path of solopreneurship never is! You have to be ready to face really hard challenges head-on and pivot when needed.
Before COVID, things were going well. Maybe even a little too well — which made me overlook the need for a business model with more longevity. My focus had always been on photography and writing, staying true to what I love and do best. When video took over… it became clear it was time for me to pivot.
It wasn’t easy. There were moments of trial and error — like unsuccessfully running a product-based business, and times when job prospects were thin on the ground. But giving up wasn’t an option.
Eventually, I found my footing again in freelance writing. I worked with a variety of clients, initially at lower pay than I was used to. It was a period of hard work and long (unsustainable) hours. But it was also a time of rebuilding and resilience.
Fast forward to today and I’m in a much better place. I’ve built up a solid portfolio and a reputation that allows me to be selective about my projects.
We’d love to learn more about your work. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
Here’s the elevator pitch version:
I help B2B/B2C brands and founders attract sales-ready leads and build thought leadership through expertise-driven SEO blogs.
In plain English?
I’m a freelance blog writer/ghostwriter with a knack for turning complex ideas into engaging, easy-to-read content.
I enjoy writing about:
- SaaS/AI
- Health/wellness
- College lifestyle
- Personal finance
- Digital marketing
- Web accessibility
- Beauty/medical aesthetics
- Solopreneurship/freelancing
- Home services/home security
… to name a few — not in any particular order 🙂
One of my standout moments was ghostwriting 40+ blogs for a top 1% LinkedIn creator in 2023. He’s known for being picky with writers, so it was extra surreal to hear him praise my work. As a high-achiever, I’m the type who’s always chasing the next goal… but that’s one achievement I take a moment to bask in.
What makes my work special? It’s the connection it creates. Many of my clients have found in my writing a voice that resonates deeply with their audience — something not easy to come by. That’s what I’m most proud of.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the COVID-19 crisis?
The path I carved out from 2014 to 2020 wasn’t just lucrative — it was a huge passion I managed to turn into a thriving business. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t hard to see it dissolve as the landscape shifted. I was forced to pivot.
It was then I learned firsthand: When it rains, it pours. In a desperate attempt to boost my savings, I dabbled in the stock trading craze. Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as a get-rich-quick scheme — this endeavor set me back even further. But hitting rock bottom and recovering from it showed me dire times don’t last forever; resilient people do.
Every day, I aim to be fluid. Because to be successful and happy in life, you have to flow with the changes… not against them.
