Serafina Yu

Hi Serafina, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I am a product designer dedicated to building trust with users through user-centric experiences.

My journey into design was nurtured primarily by the support of my architect parents. As a kid, I was drawn to graceful forms and surfaces, sketching away in my trusty notebooks wherever inspiration struck. Yet, it wasn’t merely about drawing; it was about unraveling the mysteries of beauty and intention woven into each line.

In 2019, I embarked on formal education, pursuing my B.S. degree in Interaction Design at ArtCenter College of Design. Here, I delved into the intricacies of design thinking, learning to empathize with users and solve their problems through thoughtful experiences. However, the classroom was merely the beginning; my thirst for hands-on experience led me to internships at TCL and NetEase, where I took initiatives in supporting design projects and made strides toward making a meaningful impact.

During my junior year, I seized the opportunity to join Rabbit Inc., a pivotal moment that propelled me toward the “aha” moment as a new graduate. Over the past two years, I’ve collaborated closely with a team of talented professionals, assuming leadership roles in various design projects. This experience ultimately led to my transition to a full-time position as a product designer within the company.

I am deeply grateful for the robust support I received in my early career, which has enabled me to gain significant industry exposure, particularly following the successful launch of the product I was involved in at Rabbit Inc. As I reflect on my journey thus far, I am filled with appreciation for the opportunities that have come my way, and I am committed to bringing more positive influence to the industry.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey wasn’t entirely smooth.

One of the main struggles I encountered was balancing my academic pursuits with gaining practical experience through internships. I still recall instances when I had to work during the daytime and complete my assignments late into the night. It demanded careful time management and dedication to excel in both areas simultaneously. Nevertheless, I learned to multitask and prioritize tasks based on their importance and urgency, and I viewed such obstacles as learning opportunities that contribute to my growth and development.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Certainly! As a product designer, I specialize in creating user-centric experiences at the intersection of cutting-edge technology and innovation. My work revolves around crafting intuitive interfaces and seamless interactions that resonate with users on a deeper level. I blend aesthetic elegance with functionality and usability, creating products that not only look visually satisfactory but also enhance the lives of those who use them.

One aspect I am particularly proud of is my dedication to continuous learning and growth. I constantly seek out new challenges and opportunities to expand my skills and knowledge, whether through elective courses I took at ArtCenter, hands-on experience I gained from internships, or collaboration with industry professionals. This commitment to personal and professional development allows me to stay ahead of the curve and adapt to ever-evolving design trends and technologies.

What sets me apart from others is my approach to human factors when designing products. I believe in understanding the broader context in which a product exists, including understanding not just user needs but also understanding how humans behave and interact with systems, environments, and technologies. By taking a comprehensive view of the design process, I create solutions that not only meet user expectations but also inspire people to try new things.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love most about living in Pasadena is the peaceful and calm atmosphere that envelops the city. It offers a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of urban life, allowing me to unwind and recharge amidst its serene surroundings.
