Rising Stars: Meet Sarah Castillo of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Castillo

Hi Sarah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up in Honduras, I was the only one in my family with curly hair. This unique trait sparked my lifelong passion for understanding and caring for natural hair textures. My journey took a transformative turn when my family moved to Pasadena, California at age of 13 years old. Here, I discovered a college program that aligned perfectly with my passion for hairstyling. In 2013, I graduated with the goal of finding a salon that offered education programs and classes to further hone my skills.

This quest led me to Tangles Salon in Pasadena, where I spent eight formative years. During this time, I became a certified curly hair stylist, earning my certification from DevaCurl and expanding my knowledge in SoHo, New York. Nearly two years ago, I realized my dream of owning my own hair studio in Old Town Pasadena. Today, I am proud to be a business owner and a mother to my two-year-old daughter, continuing my mission to empower and educate clients about curly hair care.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Owning my hair studio , has been both a rewarding and challenging journey. After graduating and obtaining my license, I applied to various salons and worked at three different ones before finding the right fit. Not all salons are willing to invest in education programs or provide the time necessary for thorough training.

School and professional salons have different requirements, and my goal was to find a place where I could work as an assistant for two years. This period would allow me to learn, practice, and eventually qualify to have my own chair and grow my own clientele.

Throughout my journey, finding mentors in the industry and continually embracing new opportunities and challenges have been crucial. Transitioning to owning my own business has been challenging but incredibly fulfilling. Each challenge has been an opportunity to grow, both personally and professionally.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At my hair studio in Old Town Pasadena, I specialize in curly hair and natural highlights. Since opening my own studio, I’ve earned certification with Innersense Organic Beauty, a natural vegan hair brand. This certification has allowed me to further expand my knowledge and provide hair care at a more sustainable and healthy level.

What sets me apart is my dedication to continuously learning and growing within the curly hair community. I am committed to using and promoting products that align with my values of sustainability and health. This approach has enabled me to create meaningful collaborations with brands that share my beliefs.

I am most proud of the trust and loyalty I’ve built with my clients. By focusing on education and personalized care, I help my clients embrace and enhance their natural hair texture. Currently, I’m working on exciting new projects that will be available soon, which I believe will further enhance the services I offer and continue to set my studio apart from others.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
A vacation by the beach always makes me happy because it’s the beach!
But seriously, what truly fills my heart is the blessing of doing what I love every single day. Working in the beauty industry and helping people feel and look their best fills my heart.
Additionally, having the opportunity to show my daughter the importance of following her dreams brings me immense joy. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that my passion and dedication can inspire her and others.
