Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Guaiana
Hi Sam, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Sam Guaiana. I’m a producer, songwriter, and mixer from Toronto, Ontario. After working for about ten years in the city out of my own studio, I moved to the Valley two years ago to further my career.
I started like many people in my field, playing in bands and tinkering with recording gear throughout high school. But somehow I managed to make it blossom into a full time career, working with many artists such as Silverstein, The Devil Wears Prada, Bayside, Neck Deep, Against The Current, and many more.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I would say it’s been an interesting road. The music industry is constantly evolving and taking a risk like moving to LA definitely has its drawbacks. I went from a full blown studio to a bit more of a personal production space, and of course with every big move comes the loss or strain of friendships and relationships. I definitely miss my friends and family, and LA is much more sprawled out than a dense city like Toronto, but the communities and neighborhoods out here are so warm and welcoming, and the opportunity here is like nowhere else. Making new friends and connections here has been incredible; there are so many amazing people out here and I have many friends who have also made the move over the years. Reconnecting with them has helped create a very solid sense of home here.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So I am a music producer, songwriter, and mixer. Basically I work with bands and artists to create and produce their songs from beginning to end, including helping with songwriting and sound production, along with recording their parts and mixing the final product for commercial release. I mainly specialize in rock and pop music, basically anything with real instruments and strong melody. I tend to have a pretty well tuned ear for melody and rhythm as I have played drums and been writing music for about 20 years now.
I’m particularly proud of my work with Silverstein, especially their most recent album that has yet to come out. I’ve been fortunate enough to produce and mix their last three records, including their JUNO nominated album “Misery Made Me”. For this latest record, we ended up locking ourselves away in this stunning studio in Joshua Tree called Fireside Sound. We spent five weeks up there just completely removed from the noise and were able to really dive in creatively.
I would say my experience both on the technical and creative sides of my job sets me apart from most. Often times I find the engineering aspect can be neglected with many producers who sort of just want to throw everything to the wall to see what sticks, or the home recording artists who have an abundance of talent but may not have the means to pull that vision out as clearly as they might like. I think having a very well balanced skillset will always bring out the best in any artist, and that is what I am constantly striving to do.
