Rising Stars: Meet Paula Pozo of Culver City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paula Pozo

Hi Paula , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hailing from Chile, my journey as an artist is deeply rooted in my background in Graphic Design, which has provided a strong foundation for my creative endeavors. From a young age, I’ve been immersed in the world of crafts and paints, fostering a lifelong passion for artistic expression. A naturally curious and highly creative individual, I’ve gained extensive experience working in various creative layout roles, constantly seeking new ways to push artistic boundaries. This drive leads me to continually experiment with innovative ideas and techniques, allowing me to explore diverse mediums and produce works that resonate with viewers. My paintings, for example, are characterized by their vibrant colors and intricate details, often incorporating techniques like paint pouring alongside traditional drawing. Beyond the canvas, I love to manipulate paper, layering it to form enchanting scenes and customizing shadow boxes with personal photos, breathing new life into cherished memories. This love for paper extends to creating unique and beautiful multilayered greeting cards for every occasion, reflecting my dedication to crafting art that connects with others on a personal level.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Navigating life with limited mobility in one arm, a consequence of a teenage accident, has certainly presented its share of challenges. The journey has been marked by multiple surgeries and a persistent reduction in function that leads to daily experiences with pain and restricted movement. Simple tasks most people take for granted can become complex and frustrating, requiring adaptive strategies and a constant awareness of my physical limitations. While these physical constraints add a layer of difficulty to everyday life and to any goals that I set, I am determined to not let them define my potential. I see them as obstacles to overcome, not barriers to success. I acknowledge the added effort required, but I remain steadfast in my belief that with resilience and the right approach, limitations do not equate to impossibility.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a creative soul, I find immense satisfaction in transforming cherished memories into tangible works of art through custom shadow boxes. Specializing in photo-based creations, I help clients preserve their most precious moments in a unique and captivating way. Many are drawn to the idea of immortalizing their wedding day by converting their favorite photograph into a stunningly layered shadow box, adding depth and dimension to their treasured memories. Beyond joyous occasions, I also feel privileged to help clients honor the lives of loved ones who have passed, creating personalized shadow boxes that serve as beautiful tributes, capturing the essence of their cherished relationships. My passion extends further into custom commissions, crafting intricate multilayered city layouts that tell a story. These bespoke pieces can highlight significant locations like the hospital where a child was born, the spot where a couple first met, or even present a business’s location in a striking and memorable form, making each shadow box or city map a truly personal and meaningful creation.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For a creative soul, the act of creation is as vital as breathing. It’s not merely a hobby or a side hustle, but a fundamental need, a core element of one’s being. The drive to shape, mold, and bring forth something new, whether through messy paints, intricate crafts, or any other medium, is a powerful force that cannot be ignored. Whether the art finds a buyer or remains cherished within the artist’s own walls is almost secondary to the process itself. The act of bringing an idea to life, of working with your hands and letting your imagination flow, is deeply therapeutic. It’s a balm for mental well-being, a release from the pressures of daily life. Engaging in these creative pursuits nourishes the soul, much like a nourishing meal for the body. My advice, wholeheartedly and without reservation, is this: never, ever let that spark extinguish. Never stop doing whatever it is that makes your heart beat stronger, that fills you with joy and a sense of purpose. For in that act of creation lies not just art, but also a vital connection to your own happiness and well-being.
