Rising Stars: Meet Orin Torati

Today we’d like to introduce you to Orin Torati.

Orin Torati

Hi Orin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Before entering the dynamic realm of the entertainment industry in Los Angeles, my professional journey commenced as an architect in Belgium. Drawing upon my foundational education in architecture, I developed a comprehensive understanding of design principles and methodologies crucial for spatial and visual design. However, acknowledging the limitations within the architectural profession and aspiring for increased creative autonomy, I naturally transitioned towards the vibrant landscape of the entertainment industry.

My career shift was facilitated by my enrollment in a post-graduate program at SCI-Arc in Downtown Los Angeles, where I pursued the Fiction & Entertainment program under the guidance of Liam Young. This specialized curriculum provided a focused exploration of the entertainment industry, allowing me to deepen my insights and forge connections with seasoned professionals. Moreover, it equipped me with essential skillsets relevant to the entertainment sector, complementing my architectural background.

The immersive educational experience at SCI-Arc played a pivotal role in steering me toward a more diversified and gratifying career path as a creative director, honing my craft in the process.

Within the entertainment industry, I offer a comprehensive range of creative services to a diverse clientele. My expertise spans the conceptualization and design of entire worlds for film, television series, brands, fashion editorials, and live entertainment events, including concert tours and music videos. Specializing in the art of worldbuilding, a discipline in which I have received specialized training and extensive practical experience, I bring a unique perspective to each project.

Following my graduation from the program, three colleagues and I established a production company named RAW x ____, where we leverage our expertise in worldbuilding to breathe life into captivating narratives. Through carefully curated service packages, we provide clients with tailor-made solutions, utilizing our proficiency in spatial and visual design to bring imaginative and immersive worlds to fruition.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Throughout my professional journey, I’ve traversed diverse fields, resulting in a multifaceted identity that spans a spectrum of disciplines. This unique trajectory has presented both opportunities and challenges, as I initially started as a generalist with a diverse skill set. Navigating how to integrate these skills to deliver optimal results and products took time and experience but has ultimately granted me the creative freedom and limitations that shape my work today.

The creative path, as rewarding as it is, comes with its share of challenges. Facing creative blockages and apparent impasses is an inherent part of the process. In such moments, I’ve discovered the greatest rewards in seeking input from my peers. Collaborating with colleagues not only injects fresh perspectives and diverse opinions into my work but also serves as a catalyst for overcoming creative hurdles and charting new directions for projects.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My professional trajectory has been characterized by an amalgamation of diverse fields, resulting in a multifaceted identity that encompasses a spectrum of disciplines. My professional identity is defined as that of a speculative worldbuilder specializing in the spatial and visual design of intricate worlds in which stories are told.

Through a curated selection of service packages, I provide clients with bespoke solutions tailored to their specific needs, leveraging my proficiency in spatial and visual design to bring imaginative and immersive worlds to life.

With work ranging from art and spatial installations to concert visuals and music videos, as well as film and commercial branding. I navigate these fields as a designer, creative director, and 3D artist who works through spatial design and visual storytelling.

On top of that, having my work expand into the academic community, where I am currently teaching as a faculty member of the SCI-Arc’s Fiction and Entertainment postgraduate program, keeps me on top of new software, techniques, and methodologies for any creative misuse within my practice.

What’s next?
A central guiding principle in my creative pursuits is the desire to collaboratively engage with artists and fellow creatives whom I deeply admire. The prospect of potential collaborations and collective explorations fills me with excitement, representing invaluable opportunities for mutual learning among artists.

More specifically, I am actively planning towards collaborations that are brand and fashion-facing, as they provide a creative space free of limitations and open to experimentation across various media. Much like my experience in the music industry, where I have a substantial background, these spaces offer the freedom to work without creative constraints, allowing for exploration and innovation.

In addition to my individual endeavors, I am committed to fostering the growth and expansion of the company I co-founded. This involves cultivating relationships with our existing clientele, seeking new clients, and actively pursuing collaborations with new creative partners. Concurrently, I am dedicated to acquiring new skill sets that will contribute to both personal and professional development within the dynamic landscape of our industry.
