Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Hsu
Hi Olivia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Olivia Hsu, and my journey to becoming a UX designer in the healthcare field has been both rewarding and transformative. My story began in Taiwan, where I studied product design before pursuing a Master’s degree in Product Design and Development Management at Northwestern University in the US.
From an early age, I was captivated by the intersection of art and technology. My educational background laid the foundation for my passion in design, but moving to the US and immersing myself in a new cultural and professional environment truly shaped my career.
Over the past five years, I worked as a UX designer at Keeper Security, where I focused on improving digital interfaces for password management and cybersecurity. I revamped user experiences, made security tools more accessible, and redesigned the company’s website. This experience honed my skills in creating intuitive designs and deepened my understanding of the critical role user experience plays in technology.
My journey took a significant turn when I decided to merge my passion for design with a cause I deeply care about: healthcare. I founded HealthMate, an AI-powered health management platform designed to simplify the patient experience and streamline insurance processes. This project reflects my commitment to using design to solve real-world problems and improve people’s lives.
Beyond my continuous breakthroughs in design and creating social impact, I also give back to the design community in my spare time. My YouTube channel, with over 27,300 followers, allows me to share knowledge about UX design, my experiences as a designer in the US tech industry, and insights from other designers at major tech companies. My videos have garnered over 1.15 million views in total, with the highest single video reaching 420,000 views. My channel has become a major source of inspiration for many designers worldwide who aspire to work in the American tech industry.
Throughout my career, I’ve strived to blend visual artistry with practical technology, pushing the boundaries of conventional design to create solutions that are not only functional but also engaging and user-friendly. My values of innovation, empathy, and impact drive me to continually seek ways to make a difference through design.
Looking ahead, I am excited to continue leveraging my design expertise to address challenges in healthcare and beyond, striving to make technology more accessible and impactful for everyone.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has had its challenges. Transitioning from Taiwan to the US brought cultural and professional adjustments. In my early years in the US, I faced hurdles in establishing my design career and adapting to different industry standards. Working at Keeper Security, I encountered the complexities of redesigning cybersecurity tools, where balancing usability with robust security features was demanding.
Founding HealthMate was another significant challenge. Developing an AI-based health platform required overcoming technical hurdles and navigating the healthcare industry’s regulatory landscape. Despite these obstacles, each challenge has been a learning opportunity, driving me to innovate and refine my approach.
These experiences have shaped my resilience and adaptability, crucial qualities that continue to guide my career.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in UX design with a focus on creating intuitive and impactful digital experiences. My work spans various fields, including cybersecurity and healthcare. At Keeper Security, I redesigned their security tools to enhance usability, making complex password management more accessible. My current project, HealthMate, is an AI-driven health management platform that simplifies medical processes and improves patient care.
What sets me apart is my blend of visual artistry and technology. I leverage my background in visual arts to bring creativity and aesthetic appeal to traditionally technical fields. This approach not only improves user experience but also drives innovation in how we interact with technology.
I’m most proud of HealthMate’s recent recognition as a finalist in the UX Design Awards. This acknowledgment reflects the impact of my work in making healthcare more user-friendly and accessible, and it motivates me to continue pushing boundaries in UX design.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
For those just starting out in UX design, my advice is to stay curious and continuously learn. The field evolves rapidly, so embracing new tools and methodologies is crucial. Build a strong portfolio by working on diverse projects, even if they’re personal or freelance. Don’t be afraid to seek feedback and iterate on your work.
Looking back, I wish I had focused more on understanding users’ needs and behaviors early on. It’s not just about designing beautiful interfaces but also about solving real problems and creating meaningful experiences. Networking and finding mentors can also provide valuable insights and opportunities in the industry.
