Today we’d like to introduce you to Oliver Tolentino. He and his team share their story with us below:
Originally from the Philippines, Oliver Tolentino knew he wanted to be a fashion designer at a very early age. He even learned to sew at the age of seven and had dreams of one day dressing Hollywood stars halfway around the world. In 2009 his dreams came true when he opened an original boutique on Melrose Avenue and began dressing those celebrities. Subsequently, he moved his atelier to a larger space on Robertson Blvd in Beverly Hills where he specializes in red carpet couture, custom bridal, and ready-to-wear.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Many people think fashion is a glamorous business, but it’s a business and requires talent, hard work, and perseverance all at once.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I create timeless elegant clothes with couture touches and finishes that stand out for all the right reasons at awards shows, weddings, special family events, or special parties. Many clients appreciate that the clothes will be unique since my line is carried only in my boutique. While I work in all types of fabrics, I’m especially proud also to create sustainable couture out of unique fabrics made from the leaves of pineapples and abaca plants.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
With hard work and loyal customers, you can survive anything. I’m blessed to have survived through such a shock to the retail industry.
