Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicky Davis.
Hi Nicky, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
So I started doing skincare after graduating from UCLA and deciding not to be a teacher in 1999. So that’s about 24 years ago. Right out of beauty school I lucked out and was hired at a place called Arcona Studio. Every celebrity you can think of from the late 90s came through that place. Sharon Stone, Madonna, Barbra Streisand, Michelle Pfeiffer, Julia Roberts, Lucy Liu, Shalom Harlow- all regular clients coming for facial massage. Those are just the names I can remember off the top of my head right now. (I do smoke weed so I don’t have the memory I used to.)
I was trained I learned how to do natural skin care and facelift massage. Later I was trained by guru Yakov Gershcovich in
buccal massage (which goes inside the mouth to massage the muscles from within and release major jaw tension.) I have been doing that ever since. In 2011, I started to do comedy and acting and still do both. Now I’ve got a podcast where I combine skincare with Comedy and Comedians called Sex, Drugs and Skincare.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It takes a while to build a business in skin care, but you have to hang in there and luckily I was able to find something that was very niche. Comedy, as you might imagine is not easy at all to start. It requires many many many many many hours of sucking. Lots of flop sweat. I can’t tell you how many shirts I’ve ruined with flop sweat, which is an entirely different sweat than regular sweat. Somehow the bombing hormone seaps out of your pores into your clothes never to be removed. But it has to be done in order to build calluses and become tough on stage.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am very highly trained in a specific type of facial work that is called structural facelifting and I do something called a Buccal massage which includes me massaging you inside your mouth. Now I have a show called Sex, Drugs and Skincare (available on YouTube or wherever you get podcasts).
Combining skincare with a comedy podcast is something I wish I would’ve done a long time ago… who doesn’t want to laugh and talk about skincare? Especially entertainers. Everyone needs to look good and stay young. In entertainment, looking young is job security. I used to keep comedy and skincare separate. I didn’t ever have any jokes or any talk about being an esthetician in my act. (I might be funny during facial treatments; I try to keep my mouth shut for the most part).
I am really proud of all the work I have put into both, and I’m in love with the idea of sharing that with people. Blending Skin and Comedy together was my missing link in some ways. I feel I am more of an integrated person than I ever have been. Sometimes you just have to remind yourself that you don’t have to just be one thing. You can be one thing, and another thing, and maybe another thing. It’s never too late to try something new and follow your bliss. On the SDS podcast, I get to be anything I want.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
As far as Buccal and Structural Facial Massage goes, I see it getting more mainstream and popular. 20 years ago. Nobody really knew what I did. Now there is an awareness because during the pandemic, everybody was looking for a way to look better and learn what they could do for themselves to stay young and juicy. All of that led to people going to someone like me to work on them professionally. As far as Comedy goes, I don’t know what’s gonna happen in the next 5 to 10 years. Everything is changing so fast. Television writing, and such are different in the sense that a lot of entertainers are creating their own content, which gives people who once didn’t have an in a better shot of having somebody see their work.
