Rising Stars: Meet Nathan Ramos-Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Ramos-Park.

Nathan Ramos-Park

Hi Nathan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in small-town Ohio, a pianist, singer, and competitive jump roping Capricorn. I taught for two years in Cleveland, spent five years in NYC working as an actor and in the service industry, then won a National Playwriting competition (wrote a play in a Google doc on an iPad mini bc poor) which brought me to LA. I’ve been writing professionally now for the past seven plus years and have developed and/or staffed at the following places: Amazon, Nickelodeon, Hulu, Disney (Digital, Plus, Animation, SEA), Netflix (Animation/Live Action), Snap, Mainframe, Lion Forge, and NBC, and love drawing inspiration from my love of Comedy, Genre, Music, and Coming of Age.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I didn’t grow up with money, connections, or pedigree. I came out of the closet when I was 19, and my parents didn’t agree with my ‘lifestyle’ so I worked three jobs, paid my way through college, and have always leaned on the kindness of others, my own resourcefulness, and my ability to understand systems to find my way through life and the industry ~~TrAuMaAaA~~ I think the difficult part of being creative is that trauma often makes good writers, but unprocessed trauma can eventually kill us if left untreated so get tested regularly if you out there suckin and fuckin (emotionally) <3

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a writer/actor/producer. I have worked in coming of age, animation, big box office, LGBTQ, genre, music, and diverse content – which doesn’t seem like I specialize in anything, but I think specialization is a privilege, I’m not Sophia Coppola. My parents didn’t let me watch tv or listen to music growing up so it is what it is! My personal creative work feels like laughing at a joke while grinding on the dance floor a lil fucked up, and we’re horny but about to beat the shit out of someone.

I think what sets me apart is my ability to adapt. Sometimes writers in general, find difficulty in getting notes, but I think one of my superpowers is understanding intention and making everyone feel valued and seen during a creative process. Also, knowing that creativity in Hollywood is a business so nothing is personal – even when you’re mining your trauma to sell to buyers.

I’m so proud of everything I’ve worked on. I used to equivocate things like ‘oh this could’ve been better’ or ‘I wish we would have thought of this’ but now I see all the work I do as beautiful Pokemon badges – they show that we fought like hell for something to exist out of nothing and that in itself is a herculean feat, and they don’t really mean much except now you can cross another bridge that was being gate-kept before.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I became a competitive jump roper because I was in love with my best friend in high school. We ended up going to Nationals. Check out the full story on True Story on Peacock 😉 I also was a successful sex blogger. Brownie points for you if you find my articles about giving the best head and doing anal!
