Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Newberg.
Nancy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
An east coast native, I moved to Los Angeles to study fashion at Otis College of Art and Design. After working in fashion for many years, I took a break to raise my three sons. Looking for a creative outlet, I began making jewelry for myself by stringing diamond beads in unusual ways. Friends were asking to buy these pieces and a business was soon born. I was thrilled to find a new career that would offer me an opportunity to do what I love… and that’s to design. It’s now been ten years and the journey has been really wonderful. I’ve met some amazing people along the way and I love being a part of this industry that supports so much talent. And most rewarding of all is seeing my pieces being worn and enjoyed by the women who own them.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Any time you manufacture a product it comes with a set of challenges. I have always felt is was important to keep my production here in the DTLA jewelry district. While supporting my made in LA mission, it can often be challenging to keep my price points comparable to similar brands who manufacture overseas where labor costs are much lower.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I like to combine precious metals with architectural shapes and surface textures to form jewelry that can be layered and worn in a variety of ways. Modern yet timeless, my pieces are continually evolving but the focus always remains on the women who wear them.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Jewelry and fashion played a big role in my childhood. My mom and grandmother had closets and jewelry boxes filled with many treasures. Both women had a unique sense of style which I admired. I am sure their elaborate wardrobes inspired my passion for beautiful design and detail.
