Today we’d like to introduce you to Nadine Artemis.
Hi Nadine, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My fascination with plants started when I was a child. I would play for hours in the woods with plants, leaves, sticks, and mud. This joy was further developed in 9th grade when I came across a book at the library as I was preparing for the science fair. The book was full of ancient cosmetics and perfume recipes using essential oils. My mom and I drove to the city to the health food store and bought a handful of essential oils, and I recreated L’air du Temps by Nina Ricci with them. It was an exciting project and my first success in the world of botanical science.
Later, when I was in university, I was shocked to discover that some of my favorite products, like cucumber face toner, did not contain any cucumber in it at all. It was just a bottle of synthetic chemicals! I knew that there was a pure botanical world out there, so I started making pure perfumes and some skincare items. Within months of graduation, I opened Osmosis, North America’s first full-concept aromatherapy store. Yet I longed to live in nature and craved a pause in life to think and to re-create, so after a few years I closed the store.
Then I met Ron. Some nights we would stay up till dawn, imbibing essential oils, drinking exotic elixirs, and sinking into a world of luscious libations. It was on a night like this that Ron became impassioned about working together. So we did. We started making yoga truffles and chocolate bars and co-created new perfumes and blends together. And the beginning of Living Libations bloomed.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
A few years ago, our home and business headquarters burned to the ground in the middle of the night. My family escaped the fire, but we lost everything. It was scary and deeply overwhelming to experience so much loss. While beyond devastating, it was amazing to witness the strength of our Living Libations team and business. We were amazed that we could rise out of the ashes so quickly and strongly. Through all of this, I learned even more about trusting life, about the glory of gratitude, and counting your blessings — and blessing life back. Going through something so momentous makes mundane stressors feel completely irrelevant.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am so fortunate that my intuition, passion, and creativity are intimately intermingled as an aromacologist and the founder of Living Libations, a collection of rare and exceptional botanical compounds as well as botanical health and beauty products. I feel like Living Libations is known for its purity, which is the most important factor in all things essential oils. Our nose knows, our cells know, and our skin and bodies know what is really real and pure, and because our bodies evolved alongside plants, people enjoy and feel empowered by using pure botanical oils to optimize their health and beauty.
I’m also the author of Holistic Dental Care: The Complete Guide to Healthy Teeth and Gums and Renegade Beauty. Over the last twenty years, thousands of people have come to me with their health and beauty questions, and my aim in these books is to introduce people to new ideas and methods that allow them to take their oral health, wellness, and beauty back into their own hands— and feel great! Being able to do this pleases me endlessly.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My first words of gratitude and a lot of the credit must go to the generous gifts from our botanical best friends. My hands serve at the pleasure of plants, and I let them guide me. There is no scent trail without them.
My sixth-grade teacher, Mrs. Murray, also played a big part in directing my life. One day during recess she asked me, “How would it be if you used your leadership for good, as opposed to being the class clown?” She recommended that I take my energy that I had been using for fun and focus it on things that benefit me and others. With that one question, Mrs. Murray helped to hone my career. I’m naturally attuned to beauty, feeling good, and fun, and her guidance helped me channel my energy, passions, and sense of fun into improving the lives of others. The beauty of botanicals is at the center of the Venn diagram of those things for me; it is fun, it feels good, it is all about the power of plants (my lifelong passion), and it allows me to help others look, feel, and smell beautiful.
