Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Smith.
Hi Morgan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been a dancer since I was six years old in my hometown of Gastonia, North Carolina. I always had a passion for music since I was born so my mom decided to throw me in a dance class to get my wiggles out. Every year I kept going back. I just knew that dance was where I felt most like myself, so content, and just pure love. As I became older, did more research and figured out that I could do this professionally, I made a plan.
I went to AMDA College and Conservatory of the Performing Arts and I got my Bachelor of Fine Arts and Majored in Dance. Being there taught me everything I needed to know about the dance industry, they taught me about other careers I can do inside of the arts, and I found out how I love to naturally move as a dancer. Now I’m out in the world making connections and meeting wonderful people along the way to help me start my career in being a professional dancer. I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say it’s a rollercoaster. There’s no direct path in this industry. Everyone has their own journey and it can be hard to remember at times. Not everyone is going to book every single job right out of school, not everybody gets signed right away. It’s all about your journey and once you put that in your head you begin to find your own little successes that lead you into so many more journeys. You have to stay positive and take any chance given to you!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Being an artist comes in so many forms. I’m mainly a dancer but I also love to paint, draw, film, choreograph, and create visuals. I mostly known for my dancing. My top 3 favorite styles would be hip hop, contemporary, and heels. I most proud of not giving up on myself. I Can thank my mom for installing that into me. She never let me quit anything. She would say to me “once you start you better finish it”. There’s no finish to my career but I finished school and earned my degree which was a very long journey that I’m glad I pushed through. One thing that sets me apart from others would have to be my presence. I’m a very chill and calm person which makes people gravitate toward my energy. People feel very comfortable around me and they feel like they can just be themselves around me. Which makes me feel happy that I make people feel welcome.
Any big plans?
The future feels very bright and inspiring. There are always chances around each and every corner. I would absolutely love and I mean LOVE to be on Beyoncé world tour, fingers crossed. I’m always looking forward to meeting new people to connect with and learn from. I’ve been asked to be a part of a few pieces so I’m looking forward to being a part of those.
