Rising Stars: Meet Monica Tyson of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Tyson

Hi Monica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My entry into the estate sale industry was entirely serendipitous, and while it may not have been particularly outlandish, I believe it can be both reassuring and inspiring to others. It demonstrates that with vision and determination, anyone can forge their own path. Initially, I aspired to become a fashion merchandiser, then considered a career in medicine—what I now realize was more of a pipe dream—before discovering that I would become one of the youngest individuals to run estate sales in Southern California. I’ve been managing estate sales for the past seven years, though I began selling at flea markets at the age of 19, giving me over a decade of experience in this field.

Early on, I would source inventory for flea markets by attending estate sales, and I was immediately captivated by the entire process. I’ve always had a passion for art, vintage items, and the preservation of history in any form, so it felt natural to combine these interests and dive into the world of estate sales. I used the money I earned from flea markets to fund my business license, build a website, and invest in advertising. And here I am today.

The most unexpected aspect of this journey has been how humbling the experience has been. Being part of such a sensitive transition in people’s lives is a profound responsibility. Each family has its own unique stories, filled with valuable lessons, and we play a crucial role in providing a sense of security during a fragile time. It is deeply rewarding to know that, through our work, we can offer families peace of mind and a tangible solution in moments of vulnerability.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
To put it plainly, getting to the level of experience and how I refined my structure to be as efficient as possible, has not been an easy journey. Like Theodore Roosevelt said “Nothing worth having comes easy.” Some struggles I’ve dealt with when I first started was finding a reliable and steady team with flexible hours. Learning to keep my cool when dealing with difficult customers. And minor things like finessing how I operate my sales by having a security guard, keeping crowd control, and everything along the way to run a tight ship. It’s often the small, everyday challenges that provide the most valuable learning experiences and contribute to the continuous improvement of how I run my business.

Being a business owner can be a true test to your ambition and strength. It helps you grow and is rewarding to know you created this. It’s like a plant that needs to be tended and nourished.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Unrelated to estate sales, my favorite childhood memory was going to a Pokemon competition was I was 5ish with my sister at the Santa Monica Promenade. This was back in the Pokemon Red, Yellow, Blue days. My sister and I go to the clerks to enter, and they had to scan your cartridge to participate. When they scanned my sisters, it accidentally wiped all her data. So one employee took it aside, did some coding on it, and gave it back to her with every Pokemon level 100 and maxed out in every item. I still have that cartridge.
