Rising Stars: Meet Michaela Beck of Brockville, ON

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michaela Beck

Hi Michaela, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The start of my story is when I transitioned to female, I transitioned at the age of 11… but always knew deep down that I was meant to be a girl, I just didn’t know how to go about it. Once I found the resources I needed, I was able to begin my transition. I faced transphobia and bullying at school and unfortunately at dance, I enjoyed using dance as an escape from the bullying but at times I wanted to escape from dance. I learned to have thick skin and realize that anyone who bullies or makes fun of someone for being themselves is simply not happy with who they are as a person…. it definitely prepared me for what I would go through later on with opening up about me being transgender on social media. I began posting about my transition in Spring of 2021 and have continued to share my story, tips and struggles since. I love knowing that I am helping and inspiring others to live their authentic lives and to never let the opinion of someone else change the way they think. It’s led me to so many opportunities, lifetime connections and friendships.
I am forever grateful for the support of my family, friends and my mom, without them I would not be the strong individual I am today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As I said, I face transphobia every day. It can be a struggle of course, but I know I am meant to be exactly who I am – so why should I let the opinion of someone I don’t know, change the way I see myself.

Dance teammates, so called “friends”, classmates and unfortunately grown adults have been some of people who cannot keep their opinion about my life to themselves.

I’ve always been a supporter of my favourite artists, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter & more. They’ve been huge inspirations to me ever since I was young, I believe I was Hannah Montana for halloween 7 times – lol. But they’ve always been role models I can look up to, and I appreciate them so much.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have a few different paths Id love to continue as a career, and who says I can’t do all?

My love for dance has never stopped, I enjoy teaching it to all ages and watching the students I teach grow and achieve their goals every day. I also love the creative aspect when it comes to dance, you can tell stories and show your emotions through dancing – it’s beautiful. I’d love to one day, own a dance studio of my own!

Social media was a career that I did not expect to happen, although I always enjoyed watching Youtubers and influencers growing up and wondering what that life could be like… And now I’m currently living it, but it’s not all I imagined – When putting yourself out there on the Internet, you will receive hate and negativity from people you do not know, I have and will never let an opinion from someone I don’t know, change me!

I am most proud of the way I handle situations and negativity from the internet, I’ve been really good with not letting others opinions affect me and staying exactly who I am. I love and I am so proud of who I am.

What’s next?
I try not to think too far into the future, but I am manifesting that I continue to do what I love. I want to inspire others whether it’s with dance or my story of being transgender, I love knowing that I can help others.
I’d love to get into acting & modeling, so hopefully that is in my future!
