Today we’d like to introduce you to Meron Mengist
Hi Meron, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m originally from Boulder, Colorado, and my first introduction to music was singing opera. Colorado isn’t really buzzing with music scenes aside from jam bands and theater, so my college days introduced me to songwriting. My love for songwriting led me to LA without a clear plan, just eager to collaborate with anyone and everyone.
Over the years, I’ve been lucky to team up with some very talented producers and songwriters, and have found success in the dance music scene with artists like Galantis and Steve Aoki. But a few years back, a new itch started bugging me—I wanted to share my own story through my music.
I’m all about penning introspective lyrics and layering my vocals with harmonies to create a cozy, dreamy vibe. It’s been a ride figuring out how to write for myself compared to writing for others, but I’m loving every minute of it. Balancing both sides of my music-making world brings me so much happiness
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road haha! But I think that’s just the music industry. Forever changing and unpredictable. It’s so much easier said than done but I really try to not pay too much attention on the things I can’t control. I really just try to focus on the music. I love the craft and making/editing videos and want to get better with each release. I also don’t know why but especially as of late, I have faith that things will work out in the way that they are supposed to and there is no opportunity that will miss me
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a songwriter/artist. I think I’m most known for my melodies, introspective lyrics and my love for vocal layering. I would say learning how to produce is something I’ve been very proud of. Producing music came from necessity simply because I couldn’t afford producers rates. I think what sets me apart is my vocal layering. I try to approach vocal harmonies as if they were part of the instrumental. I really like taking a vocal and putting various effects and distortions just to see what else it could sound like.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I would love to find a community of artists/producers. Especially women in music. My dream is to be able to set a camp for a few days in Joshua Tree with creative and talented women and just create and see what can happen
