Rising Stars: Meet Megan Walker of Upland, CA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Walker

Hi Megan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey began while working in an office setting, where I started rediscovering my artistic side during lunch breaks and weekends. I fell in love with paint pouring and small creative projects, and art quickly became a source of joy and fulfillment for me. However, in 2021, my life took a challenging turn when I fractured my elbow. I found myself not only without a job but also unable to pursue the art I had just begun reconnecting with.

Determined not to let this setback define me, I used the recovery time to learn how to start an art business. Slowly, as I healed, I regained the ability to paint and poured all my energy into turning my passion into a career. This led me to start Megan Walker Art Studio, where I explored resin ocean wave art and discovered new creative possibilities.

Though my arm didn’t heal correctly and required multiple surgeries, which weakened it over time, I adapted my creative focus. This led me to explore other creative outlets, like designing unique displays for small businesses under my brand Arch Theory Displays. I love working with natural materials and creating pieces that reflect the personality of each business.

Now, I’m excited to be channeling my creativity into writing ebooks. I love the process of researching and sharing ideas, and I’m eager to connect with a wider audience through this new medium. It’s been a journey of adapting and evolving, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to keep pursuing my passions in new and exciting ways.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh, gosh, smooth road? Definitely not! It’s been more like a winding mountain path with some unexpected bumps and detours along the way.

I mean, starting with that fractured elbow – talk about a setback! Not only was I out of work, but I couldn’t even do the art that had become my lifeline. It was a tough time, physically and emotionally. And even though I eventually recovered, my arm has never been the same. I’ve had to adapt my creative process and find ways to work around the limitations.

Then there’s the ever-present challenge of running a small business. It’s a constant juggling act – managing orders, marketing, finances, all while trying to stay creatively inspired. And let’s be honest, the income can be unpredictable, which definitely adds to the stress levels.

But you know, the biggest struggle has probably been the internal one. That voice of self-doubt that creeps in, questioning my abilities and whether I’m “good enough.” Overcoming that and learning to trust my instincts has been an ongoing process.

Despite all that, I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything. The challenges have made me stronger, more resilient, and more determined than ever to pursue my passions. And honestly, the feeling of creating something beautiful and meaningful, whether it’s a piece of art or an ebook, makes it all worthwhile.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
That’s a great question! I’ve always been drawn to creating things that are both beautiful and functional. Lately, I’ve been focusing on two main areas:

First, there’s Arch Theory Displays. I design and create unique wooden displays for small businesses. Think custom signage, tabletop displays, and those kinds of things. My style is definitely boho-inspired, with lots of natural textures, intricate rattan cut patterns, and elegant arches. I love helping other small business owners elevate their branding and create displays that really stand out.

Secondly, I’m really excited about my new venture into the world of ebooks! I’m currently working on a series called The Resilient Maker. It focuses on overcoming creative blocks, adapting to challenges, and building a sustainable creative business, with a special emphasis on leveraging Google apps and AI tools. I love the idea of sharing my knowledge and passion with a wider audience and hopefully inspiring others to pursue their own creative dreams.

What am I most proud of? Honestly, it’s the connections I’ve made with my clients. Whether it’s helping a small business owner create a display that truly represents their brand or inspiring someone to pick up a paintbrush for the first time, those moments are what make it all worthwhile.

As for what sets me apart, I think it’s a combination of things. I’m definitely a perfectionist when it comes to details, and I’m passionate about creating high-quality, personalized pieces. But I also bring a deep understanding of the challenges and joys of being a small business owner myself. That empathy allows me to connect with my clients on a different level and create something that truly resonates with them.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
That’s such an important question! Here’s my advice for those just starting out, sprinkled with a bit of what I wish I knew back then:

Embrace the messy middle: Starting a business is rarely a straight line to success. There will be bumps, detours, and moments where you feel completely lost. Embrace those moments! They’re all part of the learning process.

Start small and focused: Don’t try to do everything at once. Pick one or two things you’re passionate about and really hone in on those. You can always expand later.

Systems are your secret weapon: I can’t stress this enough! Invest time early on in setting up systems for things like customer communication, order tracking, and production. It will save you so much headache down the road.

It’s okay to pivot: Your initial vision might change, and that’s okay! Be open to exploring new directions and adapting your plans as you learn and grow.

Find your community: Connect with other creatives and entrepreneurs. Share your struggles, celebrate your wins, and learn from each other’s experiences. It makes the journey so much richer.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help: There are so many resources available, from online courses to mentorship programs. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for guidance.
And most importantly, remember that progress is better than perfection. Just keep taking those steps forward, even if they’re small ones. You’ve got this!
