Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Kelley.
Hi Megan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I have always seen images not only as moments frozen in time but as living, breathing testaments to the relationships and histories that shaped my world. In the faded hues of old family photographs, I drew an impression of the bonds between my siblings before I was born, digested the tender moments of my mother nursing her firstborn, and smiled at pics of my father holding me in his arms in front of a van that he still owns until this day. These images weren’t mere pictures; they were the threads weaving the tapestry of my family’s story, guiding my imagination through time I did not witness with my own eyes.
I naturally gravitated toward capturing life on film, whether through the instantaneous joy of an Instaprint Polaroid, the nostalgia of a 35mm film camera, or the easy fun of a disposable camera. Reviewing developed films filled me with a sense of satisfaction, a feeling that followed me into college, where I chose photography as my elective. In darkroom became my dimly lit sanctuary.
Eventually, life led me down a path of corporate responsibility and professional obligations. As an executive assistant in a small business, I wore a multitude of hats, juggling tasks with the grace of a seasoned performer. Yet, amidst the chaos of my responsibilities, the flame of my creative spirit flickered but never died. Though I was committed to not becoming a photographer, the pull of photography proved irresistible.
Then, a chance encounter with an old college flame sparked a revelation. His simple question—”Why are you not shooting anymore?”—was a gentle nudge, a reminder of a joy I had once cherished. And in a gesture both simple and profound, he gifted me my first DSLR camera. It wasn’t the best camera by any means, but it was enough to reignite my passion for photography. Armed with nothing but a camera and a dream, I embarked on a journey of rediscovery, guided by the whispers of my heart and fueled by the promise of what could be.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road by any means. Like any journey worth taking, mine has been marked by challenges and obstacles that tested my resolve and pushed me to my limits.
One of the struggles I faced was balancing my passion for photography with the demands of a corporate job. As an executive assistant, I wore many hats and often found myself overwhelmed by the sheer volume of responsibilities. Finding time to nurture my creative side amidst the chaos of my professional life was a constant battle.
Another challenge was overcoming self-doubt and imposter syndrome. Despite my love for photography, I struggled with the idea of pursuing it as a career. I doubted my skills and questioned whether I had what it takes to succeed in such a competitive field. Overcoming these internal obstacles required a great deal of courage and self-reflection.
Additionally, there were practical challenges to navigate, such as the financial constraints of starting a photography business and the learning curve of mastering new technologies and techniques. And unexpectedly, the burgeoning era of social media added another layer of complexity to my journey. While it offered unprecedented opportunities for exposure and connection, it also brought with it new pressures. I often fell into a comparison trap and did not feel willing to learn publically. I struggled with the pressure to curate the perfect feed, gain likes and followers, and keep up with trends.
However, I finally realized that no one cared that much and learned that each obstacle was an opportunity for growth and learning.
Ultimately, the challenges I faced along the way only served to deepen my affection for photography and learn the ways I felt it best served my life. They reminded me that the path to success is rarely smooth, but every hurdle brings me one step closer to realizing my vision.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Based in the vibrant city of Los Angeles, I, Megan Kelley, bring together a unique blend of creativity and communication expertise to the realm of digital marketing. From an early age, I was entranced by the enchanting world of movies, commercials, and advertisements, harboring dreams of stepping onto the silver screen as an actress. Yet, it was during my college years that I discovered the true magic behind the scenes—the creative geniuses crafting the visual stories that captivated me.
Guided by a passion for storytelling and armed with a diverse skill set in communications, acting, and photography, my journey unfolded. With each experience, my vision crystallized, fueled by a desire to make a meaningful impact on the world through the art of visual narrative.
I hold a master’s degree in communication management and boast over a decade of experience in the field of photography. Through this experience and education, I have molded a creative space that creates visual narratives for CEOs while staying steadfast to my core attachment to preserving memories through capturing weddings. I have used my experience to cultivate a business that builds dreams and preserves them. My work is more than just images; it’s a testament to the power of storytelling to uplift, inspire, and connect on a deeper level. I don’t know that I will forever be able to hold on to this double niché of wedding and brand photography. But for now, I find my work fulfilling.
What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to intentional creativity and my ability to seamlessly blend the worlds of visual aesthetics and strategic communication. Whether behind the camera lens or in the boardroom, I strive to create meaningful experiences that resonate with audiences and leave a lasting impression.
I am most proud of my ability to translate complex ideas into compelling visual stories that spark emotion and drive action. Each project is an opportunity to push boundaries, challenge conventions, and ignite change—one frame at a time.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Along my journey, the most important lesson I’ve learned is the necessity of trusting my gut instinct. I discovered that intuition is a powerful compass that should not be ignored. Whether it’s making pivotal career decisions or navigating creative challenges, learning to listen to that inner voice has been paramount.
Another vital lesson has been embracing failure as an inevitable steppingstone on the path to success. Each setback has been an opportunity for growth and learning. Failure is not a destination but rather a necessary part of the journey towards realizing one’s dreams. It teaches resilience, perseverance, and the invaluable lesson that success often lies just beyond the horizon of adversity.
Furthermore, I’ve come to understand that, regardless of the industry or profession, we are all in the business of sales. Whether I’m pitching a creative concept to a client, promoting my photography services, or simply selling an idea to my team, effective communication and persuasion are essential skills. Building relationships, understanding the needs of others, and articulating the value of what you have to offer are all integral components of success in any endeavor.
Ultimately, these lessons have shaped me into the person and professional I am today. They have instilled in me a deep sense of self-reliance, resilience, and the unwavering belief that with passion, perseverance, and a willingness to trust in myself, anything is possible.
