Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Holliday
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Maya Holliday. I’m from Philly born and raised. When I was four years old, I told my parents that I was going to be a performing artist. At nine, I took my first class and it went from there. I never stopped studying the arts.
I went to The Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts and American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. A few years later, I relocated to LA. I’ve lived in LA off and on for the last handful of years and it’s always a place where I plan, connect and get right in my soul. I have a deep relationship with the city.
There are a lot of patterns in the entertainment business that I refuse to repeat. So now I do my best to create what I want to see in this world. My fiancé and I started a production company called School Of The Gifted Productions. Now we produce content, music, visuals and moments for artists and businesses we believe in, including our own music projects.
Now I’m working full time at a theatre, running our business, and falling in love.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
You know that quote by Joseph Campbell, “If the path before you is clear, you’re probably on someone else’s?” It was not a smooth road. Some of the struggles were financial, relational, growing pains, grief…
The road has been filled with unforgettable lessons and unexplainable blessings.
I remember when we were told that less than 1% of venture capital funding goes to women and black owned businesses. So we mourned, honored those who came before us, and we pivoted. The road may be filled with twists and turns, but if you’re down for the ride, you’ll always get where you need to go!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I make music under my name, Maya Holliday. I have an EP titled Reap. I’m in a duo called “Don’t Leak.” Our sound is a modern take on Soul music. I write to process, I have a Substack titled, “words, words, words.” I am still acting in independent films.
I make music straight from my heart and soul. I’m honest. I’m bare. I’m poetic and I’m studied. I know music from every angle. Sheet music, church, classical, r&b, soul, it’s all in me. So if you like that sound, come check me out.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
