Today we’d like to introduce you to Maurice Tyson.
Hi Maurice, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
After my mother, Myrtle Joseph, a retired registered nurse and a native of St.Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, passed away in 2001. I was pursuing acting and working as a substitute teacher. I was lost. The woman who raised me to be the man I had to be was no longer there. I couldn’t process it because the pain was so undeniable. But that’s what I did. I threw myself into whatever I could to not deal with her passing. When the Christmas holidays came, I wasn’t in the mood to shop for friends and family. It was then I was reminisced about the baking my mother used to do. Cakes, pies and cookies. The chocolate chip cookies she made from scratch was the highlight of my childhood.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I never in my mind thought this was going to be easy. I believe once I had the concept in place, the endless hours of research helped to shape my vision. The struggle was having to be the only one doing the work.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The idea about creating chocolate chip cookies that had homemade taste and family appeal intrigued me. I wanted to create a constant reminder of who she was to me. So far after three years of baking, promoting and strategics, I feel I have something which brings people authenticity.
I believe an online chocolate chip cookie store stands apart from brick-and-mortar stores. I have a home business and what I’m proud of is the quality of my mother’s name attached to the cookies I bake. It’s the one of the best tributes I can think of.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
To be inspired by ancestors and their journey was key. My mother was hardcore St. Cruzan, and my father was from St. Kitts, Nevis. The historical lineage of doers on my father’s side is amazing.
