Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am the owner of Black Gold Skincare. My line is a combination of all-natural handmade skincare products. I just recently launched my business in December of 2020. I started making my own products as a self-care routine for myself. I would just make scrubs for my hands, and that would be my peacetime throughout the day. Then, like most of us my skin took a turn for the worse. So instead of going out and buying products, I started to research ways that I could treat my skin naturally. The more I researched and began to make and use the things I was learning, I started to see results. I thought, why keep this to myself. Everyone goes through skin challenges, some more than others. So if I have something that works, and helps people realize how important self-care is for your body AND your skin, then I should share that. So here I am, with Black Gold Skincare. I create sugar and salt scrubs, natural soaps, serums, oils, and more.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a new business, I know that I will face many challenges along the way. Up until now, the biggest obstacle for me was starting my business. I had many days and nights that I doubted myself. I hesitated on launching because I was nervous on what my success would be. Now I know that no matter what my success is, I’m winning because I started. I have received so much so support since I’ve started. It’s almost overwhelming. I’m just grateful and thankful at this point. This has been so fulfilling that I’m even in the works in launching another business, RichGirlz LA, and I have 2 of my cousins in on it with me, so be on the lookout for that!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a teacher at heart. I worked in the Early Education field for three years, then went to school and I just graduated class of 2020. When the pandemic hit, my son had to stay home from school, so did I. I’ve been away from the classroom since, but have learned so much more about myself and what I want for my future. I’m proud of getting to where I am in the education field, and although I’m not in the classroom now, I do plan to use my skills in teaching, I may have a how to book, or maybe even a children’s self-care book coming soon. We will see where my path takes me.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
This biggest lesson I’ve learned during this pandemic is to bet on myself. I’ve always believed in myself but I’ve had so many goals and plans that I let fail because I didn’t trust my own capabilities. This COVID-19 crisis has at the least taught me to hustle. Like we all have seen many people have started businesses and got LLCs during this pandemic, I think that shows us that we all have some hustle in us. The bigger question though is, who’s going to stay consistent once it’s over. I know I will.
