Rising Stars: Meet Mariah Jackson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Jackson.

Hi Mariah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Since about the 5th grade, I always knew that I was going to have a career in fashion. One of my duties for my first internship in 2018 was to assist my supervisor with in-house photoshoots. I learned so much at that internship about how fashion design, merchandising, and marketing all come together for shoots. After my internship, I assisted photoshoots for my friends and soon had my own photoshoot to showcase my collections from my fashion classes. 2020 was actually a reset year for me and after years of convincing myself that I would be a fashion designer or tech designer, it finally clicked to me that I just could not keep containing my creative visuals and needed to do photoshoots 24 / 7.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
When I first started, my biggest issue was expenses because I was coming out of pocket for everything. The studio, the clothes, accessories, makeup, props, etc. This quickly ate up my savings because I always go all out for my shoots. I never had the opportunity to shadow a stylist when I first started so I had to learn everything as I went – I still do. However, I was fortunate enough to make my connections with other creatives, designers, etc so my job is much more smooth sailing and less stressful now!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a stylist and creative director. I also sometimes create or alter clothes and accessories. What I think sets me apart from others is that I strive to have at least one small business or up and coming creative in each of my shoots. The only way we will succeed is if we support each other and help build each other up.

What are your plans for the future?
My short term goal is to own a second fashion business which I will not give any more details on 🙂 Just stay tuned! My long term goal is to style some of my favorite music artists/actors/actresses for big events and music videos. In the future, I will also have multiple creative spaces in major cities.
