Today we’d like to introduce you to Lulu DePina.
Hi Lulu, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In May 2021, I embarked on my journey of establishing a pilates studio in the comfort of my own home. Equipped with just one reformer, a mirror on the floor, and a throw rug, I created a space that I took great pride in. My aim was to assist my dancer friends, neighbors, and those who couldn’t afford it by offering them the opportunity to pay what they could. The primary objective was to aid individuals in regaining mobility, engaging in physical exercise, and enhancing their overall well-being, encompassing their physical, mental, and spiritual aspects. This space quickly became a sanctuary for people, and its popularity grew rapidly through word of mouth. My unwavering goal then, as it is now, is to ensure that pilates remains accessible and affordable for the community. Within a few months, I had amassed a few dozen clients, and by the summer of 2022, I had expanded to four reformers and began teaching group classes in my home. This success prompted me to consider opening a commercial space, and in August 2022, I commenced my search as a tribute to my Nana. Within a week, I secured the keys to a new studio, and with the support of my family, I successfully opened its doors by the first week of September 2022.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Since the beginning, it has been an immense amount of effort. I rarely take breaks as I now own two small studios located in West Adams. Being new to this role, I have made some mistakes, but I acknowledge them and continuously learn from them. Although I wish I had qualified for a grant, I am currently funding everything myself. While I could have managed my budget differently, I have generally made wise business choices and am happy with what I am doing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Over the past ten years, I have dedicated myself to producing the Bootleg Bombshells, a Burlesque Show in Los Angeles. However, my journey has taken a new direction as I recently became the proud owner of two Pilates studios. Although I have been certified since 2009, I took a break from teaching until just after the pandemic. In 2021, I established West Adams Pilates to offer affordable Pilates classes in a welcoming and inclusive environment for people of all ages, backgrounds, and ethnicities. I wanted to create a Pilates space specifically for the Black and Brown community, as Pilates can sometimes feel intimidating and unwelcoming. I also wanted the studio to feel like an extension of my home. As our studio thrived, we expanded to a second location within the newly opened Gymtonic, where we now offer private and duet sessions. It was a pleasant surprise to discover that our mission closely aligns with Gymtonic’s, making us an ideal team for collaboration.
Additionally, I am passionate about incorporating various forms of health and wellness. Following the success of two intention-setting Soundbaths at the end of 2023, I will host monthly Soundbath and Meditation workshops. My goal is to support other small businesses and provide a wide range of modalities that promote mental and physical well-being in the community. My clients are everything!
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Creating an inclusive and safe space for everyone is crucial. The term “fitness for everybody” is often mentioned, but it truly matters when a new client walks into the studio, unsure about pilates and their abilities, and can leave class feeling accomplished. My goal is for clients to feel like they belong to a close-knit family where they are supported rather than judged. We already put enough pressure on ourselves to meet unrealistic standards, so my studio aims to help people find a fitness commitment that brings them joy and overall well-being.
