Today we’d like to introduce you to Louise Royer.
Hi Louise, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Louise Royer, a French national who has resided in Hong Kong for eight years and Los Angeles for five years. My diverse background and travel experiences have enabled me to establish connections with friends and family worldwide and their cultures. I have a passion for meeting new people, learning about their cultures and perspectives. However, it has proven difficult to share my projects or hang out with them physically. This is what ignited my interest in the virtual world. I hold a BA in Multimedia and Animation from Loyola Marymount University, where my love for XR, 3D design, coding, and learning new software was born. My goal is to create projects that connect people beyond physical barriers, convey stories, and bring joy to people’s lives.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My challenge was discovering my passion in a new city where I had no connections. I began studying Filmmaking but only found satisfaction in video editing. During my first year, I struggled with homesickness and a lack of direction. I changed my major to multimedia in my second year, hoping to pursue video editing. However, adjusting to a new university was difficult and I still felt lost. The pandemic hit during my sophomore year, and I returned to Hong Kong to be with my family. I started a video and photo editing business. During my junior year, I had remote classes from France, working at night due to time difference. It was then that I discovered 3D modeling and programming, which led me to create a banana world project for my final assignment. The project won an award and boosted my confidence. I realized I enjoyed this 3D and coding and it didn’t feel like working. When I returned to Los Angeles for my senior year, I became more self-assured in myself and my work. The same year, I challenged myself by entering a 30h hackathon in UX/UI design and with my team, we won first place, faced my fears of heights by going skydiving and public speaking by doing a speech and interviewing people. This helped me become a more positive, confident person, which showed in my personality and my work. I discovered UX/UI/XR design and opened my own business working with brands. Today, I made a lot of friends and connections. Along the way, I learned that finding your passion requires trying many different hobbies, and creating great projects involves not being afraid to ask for help.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Currently, I am employed as a full-time lead user experience (UX) and interface (UI) designer and content manager for an online magazine, where I am responsible for redesigning the entire platform and creating engaging content. On a daily basis, I hold meetings with developers in the morning to discuss necessary changes and fixes for the platform, while in the afternoon, My responsibilities include designing the platform and overseeing content management.
What does success mean to you?
My aspiration is to find a career that feels like a passion, something I could engage in endlessly without the sense of work. My ultimate objective is to collaborate with prestigious brands like Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent, Coca-Cola and/or artists such as Zedd or Selena Gomez to design their XR experience. This is what success looks like to me.
