Today we’d like to introduce you to London Cooper.
Hi London, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
London Wick was created during a time when the world and I needed some extra love, joy and happiness (pandemic). DIY projects have always been therapeutic for me. It wasn’t until I was at a low point in life. I was unhappy, dealing with depression and felt like I wasn’t achieving my potential. I knew there was more to life that I wanted to do than clock into a 9-5 every day. I was tired of fear stopping me from pursuing my dreams and doubting myself. In 2019 a friend and I started a luxury curated picnic business. We both shared similar creative visions. Our plan together created something beautiful that allowed me to not only express my creativity but also allowed me to evolve my creative side that I didn’t know existed. I learned that I was good and creating beautiful setups and had an eye for things that other people find aesthetically beautiful. Creating London Wick was a huge breakthrough for me personally and mentally.
During the beginning of covid, I was forced with downtime and needed hobbies to keep my mind away from the chaos. I’ve always loved candles and ordering a candle kit has been on my list for a while. I spent many days testing and making candles for friends and family. I thought to myself let’s see how far you can take this. Could my quarantine hobby become an actual business? After great feedback and enjoying creating scents I decided to go for it. I’ve always been a hands-on learner. My late grandfather and I would build many objects growing up and I believe my love for DIY projects came from him. I knew the vision I wanted, and I worked hard to achieve it. Creating candles and building a brand has been fulfilling in ways I never knew existed. I take pride in my work. I’m more confident in myself and most importantly I enjoy what I do. I hope everyone at some point in life experiences the feeling of doing things that bring them joy.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business is no walk in the park. You will have to decide at some point if you’re willing to fight and work hard to reach your goals.
I will say fear was the hardest hurdle for me. Not believing that I could achieve the things I wanted for my brand. You’ll get discouraged, but you must be kind to yourself. Struggles and bumps in the road will come and go, but you must keep a positive mind and keeping pushing.
It’s also hard to stir a ship alone. As a small business owner, you wear multiple hats. The photographer, creator, manager, accountant, etc. It can be overwhelming and draining at times. My advice if you can, hire some extra hands or ask family to help out.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
London wick creates scents from multiple different clean scent fragrance oil. I typically stray away from the usual candle scents and create scents that are unfamiliar and soft to the nose. My scents are created to mimic luxury spas, hotels, resorts and perfumes ranging from woody and citrusy to masculine. The base of my candle products is natural coconut wax. Typically candles found in stores are made with Pfaffian and Soy wax. Coconut wax creates a clean eco-friendly long-lasting burn with a powerful scent throw. With the candle industry being so popular it’s important to stand out and bring memorable scents and experiences.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Being a candle maker requires me to interact with customers and talk a lot. I get compliments on my bubbly personality and how well I articulate the story behind my brand in public. I’m actually an introvert who prefers to be home watching movies under the covers. I cringe at large crowds and noisy environments. When it’s about my brand, I guess I morph into a social butterfly. Lol.
