Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Morgan.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I always had a love for all things makeup. I would watch my mother put her makeup on be amazed at how perfect the finished look was. She wasn’t a makeup artist, but definitely could have been one. I went to The Academy of Art College in San Francisco after high school. I honestly didn’t know what I wanted to do. I left after a semester but learned a lot about color theory. I decided to take some makeup artist classes and landed a job right away. That year I began working as a fill in makeup artist at KTVU in Oakland. I learned a lot about TV makeup, on the job…those very patient anchors allowed me to hone my craft. Fast-forward a couple of years and I decided to move to LA to pursue my dreams to become a professional makeup artist on set. 30+ years, I am still doing what I love.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Has it been a smooth road? Absolutely, not! It is a tough business with a lot of rejection. You have to have a thick skin and be prepared for the competition. It can be a fun job, but not always glamorous. I say that when I am sitting in the desert in 100 degree weather; sweaty and dirty. I would say some of my struggles would be adjusting to the long hours and being a single mother. I juggled being a mother and following my dreams. It wasn’t always ideal, but I made it work.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Currently, I am working on a show called Loot. I primarily specialize in beauty makeup for TV and tattoo coverage. I am mostly hired and known for this. Lately, episodics and commercials have kept me pretty busy. I am most proud of surviving this business for 30+ years and being able to own property as a result of my hard work. California is not easy when it comes to homeownership! I also am proud of receiving an Emmy and Golden Mike awards for my makeup work in news. I was able to give them to my mom, dad, and my daughter. I think what sets me apart from others is my personality. By nature, I love to connect people, help and inspire others, and have fun! There are a lot of talented makeup artists out there, that are better than me, with less experience. When you have to work long hours together, you want to be on set with people that make it fun..that is me…I make it a point to meet everyone on set. I try hard to learn as many names as possible. I don’t know any strangers. I feel it’s important to treat everyone the same and with kindness. You never know who is watching and where your next job will come from. All the caterers and craft services people know me 🙂 Anyone that sits in my chair, is a celebrity to me. It is my answer when I am asked what celebrities I have worked on…
I also started my own custom lipgloss line in 2020 to honor my dad who passed away that year. He always wanted me to have my own cosmetics company and it was the best way I could honor him.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
On my journey I have learned that being able to do what you love and to be paid for it is a blessing. My career is important to me, but my daughter comes first. She is watching me and I want her to be proud. I have never been afraid to fail. I like to say, I live life on the edge. If it doesn’t work, at least I tried….but what if it does work. How would you know if you didn’t try it. I have picked myself up many times. It’s called “life”
