Rising Stars: Meet Lisa Bolden

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Bolden.

Lisa Bolden

Hi Lisa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been making creative little films and comedic skits since I was a kid in the 90’s. Everything video is completely engrained in my hands, brain, and heart – A true second language to me. I still love filmmaking and approach it largely the same way I did in those first moments. With true curiosity and an understanding that I will never know everything there is to know about capturing images. I always lean toward the sentimental, nostalgic, beautiful, and absurd.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Video and photography have been both wildly satisfying and passionate and extremely vulnerable and uncomfortable. The raw moments you spend with people capturing their art are completely priceless – Interviewing them through their embarrassment, discomfort, and anxiety, experiencing them in their highest form, witnessing your subjects see themselves through your eyes, and watching their life like a movie.

My struggles have mostly been self-made through judgment, doubt, imposterism..etc. Also, I am a true artist through and through, which has given me the highest highs and deep, despairing lows (hahaha). This has made the business side of working as a freelancer/contractor very hard at times.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love short, artful, stylized narrative films. Music videos and sentimental content are my big loves right now. I am most proud of how my art makes people feel. I often get emotional responses to my videos and photography.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I think luck plays a small role in who I’ve come across and the connections it’s made. More than anything, I think I’ve been lucky in friendship – My friends are my family and they have made endless art with me over the years. They’ve allowed me to film them in their vulnerable moments, photograph them in their personal spaces, and experiment over time. Absolutely priceless bond-forming, helping me to understand humans and the way they translate into imagery.
