Today we’d like to introduce you to Lex Orozco-Cabral.
Hi Lex, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born broke with expensive taste, so I knew I would have to get to work to attain the lifestyle that I was meant to lead. At 17, I lead to Damian Jr. gong Marley. That I was a stylist because he was intrigued by me. And my obscure kook style of dressing. So, he was my first major client, and my career began off of me “manifesting” (lying) that I was a stylist. And I actually became a sought-after one.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, I’m a brown boy dealing with major designers’ major credit cards and expense accounts. I was profiled, and I was followed around department stores/ showrooms. No one took me seriously. Until I pulled out the Amex black card. Then it turned into “Who helped you”? “May I offer you Champagne?” The industry was a very racist gate-kept mentality. But the tide is slowly turning. Even if it is performative.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I managed to style so many greats in my career. Sri Lankan-born M.I.A is one of my fondest memories and work. As she gave me the space to be creative as possible. The Kala record changed all our lives as she went more mainstream and got festival dates. It exposed me to every major festival in the world. Like I did Glastonbury as a 20-year-old. It was overwhelming and daunting at times, but I’m a double Leo, so I knew this is where I belonged.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Go everywhere alone. I go everywhere, still alone. When you’re with a ground of friends of people no one new will talk to you. When you are alone, I’ve met some of the most incredible people because they see I’m not interacting with anyone, so the choose to interact with me. Dress for the life you want. You wanna give, don’t care, given up on life sweatpants. That’s the life you will lead: Leisure, chill, cozy. I want it all, so when u see me, I look like a f*cking Power Ranger because I’m setting the world on fire. I am global warming.
