Rising Stars: Meet Levi Young

Today we’d like to introduce you to Levi Young.

Hi Levi, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up playing sports and being active, so I never really tapped into my creative side until way later when I was working full-time in the medical field and started getting into film.

I realized in my early 20s that the 9 to 5 grind was not for me, and I decided to explore my creative side at a time when I became more and more interested in Photography.

Shortly after, I bought my first camera and took some of the worst photos I have ever seen… lol

But on the bright side, I knew this was something I wanted to dedicate myself to, so I ended up taking about a year to teach myself photography, videography, and eventually everything in between.

Fast forward to today, I’m now focused on working as a DP and creating my own short films on top of smaller passion projects.

Looking back on my journey, I feel incredibly lucky to have found a passion where work doesn’t feel like work but rather a way to express myself.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So many ups and downs… So many moments where I doubted myself and if I was good enough.

Some of the struggles early on was the huge learning curve where there was so much information and technique to learn. As someone who is impatient it was a struggle to have the patience to learn every day.

Also, another struggle I’m sure many can relate to was the challenge of growing on social media. I had to constantly remind myself that I’m not creating for likes but as a way to express myself through art.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Currently, I work as a Photographer, Videographer, and DP. On social media, I guess you can say I’m known for short-form cinematic reels, which I’ve gathered a good portion of my followers.

I feel so far from where I want to be, which is eventually creating and directing my own short film. I’m not sure if there is a specific work I’m proud of on the top of my head, but when I do create my own movie one day, that will probably be the one.

I’d like to say my creative mind sets me apart. I love to think outside the box and daring to try things that most would not.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I learned to slow down, be patient, and be grateful for the little things during such a crazy time.

It was a tough time for everyone, but I think it also brought everyone together to get through it.
