Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Robson.
Hi Leah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I came to LA straight from living abroad in Thailand. I actually got my first PA job from an Uber driver. For me, being on set was love at first sight. I’d never been anywhere so collaborative and fulfilling.
I initially gravitated toward camera and learned to pull focus. I 1st AC’d four features, 2 TV shows, and countless commercials. Camera work took me all over the states and even out of the country a few times.
Several years back, I transitioned into Producing. My time in crew was a front-row seat to good and bad filmmaking. I still credit my time as an AC as the biggest influence on my producing style. I deeply understand crew and equipment. I can anticipate needs and build a working environment that people can find joy in.
My specialty has tapered into virtual production. I’m currently the studio producer at Orbital Virtual Studios and spend my day curating tailored solutions to integrate the virtual and physical world on set.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My challenge is mediating the creative and financial needs of film production with a sustainable way of life for the crew. Virtual production solves both. It’s fiscally advantageous while also establishing a healthy and safe working environment for the people executing the visions. It’s my mission to maintain a workplace that uplifts people to thrive in their individual craft.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m deeply passionate about virtual production. Orbital Virtual Studios is built on the foundation of love of film and trust between friends. It’s been an honor to be on the founding team of this new studio. We’re pioneering a new way of filmmaking that’s efficient and tangible.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
LA is a city of dreamers. I love filmmaking, but I love filmmakers even more. Every person in LA came to this city with reckless hope. Time and time again, I hear a common story of a young person packing up an old sedan and heading west to make it happen. I too came to LA without much of a foundation and painstakingly built my community and career. The energy in this city keeps the dream alive for all of us.
