Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Johnson.
Hi Laurie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
ALLWAYZ ON STAGE is an inclusive theatre company based in Conejo Valley, CA. Established to address the pressing need for greater inclusivity in theatrical productions and musicals, AOS provides more opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
Founder Laurie Johnson recognized this need when her daughter, Brianna (aka Breezy), and friends would audition for community productions and wouldn’t be cast. This experience motivated her to initiate a theatre project as an antidote to the limited opportunities available.
“After years of participating in community theatre myself, I came to the realization that some of our exceptionally gifted cast members may never secure a lead role, supporting role, or even any role at all. The neurotypical typically undergo numerous auditions and performances, while neurodivergent individuals, those with special needs, disabilities, or diverse abilities (the terminology may vary, but the needs remain the same), may have to wait for an entire year or more before another opportunity arises.” — Laurie Johnson, AOS Founder
Johnson was motivated to establish a program specifically designed for individuals with disabilities who share an affinity for the performing and creative arts. This would also include, and be supported by, neurotypical actor mentors and mentors-in-training. Her objective was to provide a platform for these individuals to showcase their talents and foster a sense of community through shared interests and camaraderie. The endeavor commenced in 2007, with inaugural productions held in the Johnsons’ backyard, featuring Breezy and two friends with a passion for performing.
“Annually, the number of cast members increased. Support also continued to grow—with new mentors, crew members, sound technicians, lighting operators, family members, and friends assisting with everything from constructing sets and costumes to providing refreshments. In 2015, the backyard audience reached capacity with over 150 members, and we recognized the need for a change.”
That year, Johnson was motivated to establish the non-profit organization, ALLWAYZ ON STAGE, after witnessing the disappointment of our participants still not being cast in other community shows. She believed it was imperative to provide additional opportunities for differently abled actors in lead and principal roles. She aimed to build a space where she could ensure that the majority of the cast was composed of diverse individuals.
With the invaluable support of a dedicated and talented team of family, friends, and ardent believers in the AOS mission, ALLWAYZ ON STAGE has flourished over the past decade into a robust organization—boasting a diverse ensemble of cast, crew, and mentors. Many of the original mentors have continued to volunteer their time and expertise since 2010, dedicating themselves for an impressive 15 years.
The ultimate objective of ALLWAYZ ON STAGE is to foster a resilient community of individuals who share a passion for the arts. We aim to establish enduring friendships and connections that will provide lifelong support and prevent feelings of isolation. AOS empowers its members to continue showcasing their talents and achievements and always have an opportunity for a time to shine. Our vision is to strengthen the foundation of ALLWAYZ ON STAGE to expand and grow—to engage more performers, mentors, and audience members.
Prior to performances and rehearsals, we inquire with our cast about their most cherished aspects of ALLWAYZ ON STAGE. The most frequently mentioned are: the profound bonds of friendship, the fostering of a supportive community, the nurturing of familial relationships, and the creation of a secure environment conducive to performing.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The most significant challenge that we face is fundraising. ALLWAYZ ON STAGE is a CA Nonprofit that relies on the support of our incredible community to keep the program flourishing. As we continue to prioritize growth and the creation of opportunity for more and more individuals throughout Southern California, we must also consider the essential needs of our operation — such as office space, a workshop classroom, rehearsal spaces, set/costume design work/storage space and the compensation of our staff who bring so much to the program.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Retired from Talent Agency. Devoting my time and talent to Allwayz On Stage.
