Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Wong.
Hi Laura, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I knew I was a witch from a very young age. I didn’t always have a name for what I felt, but I figured it out and always had some sort of secretive practice. I’ve lived in Los Angeles for more than a decade, and at first was doing acting and jobs of that sort. I have a strong performing arts background. That became tiresome, and I decided to lean into the thing that was most precious to me- witchcraft. Back in 2017, there wasn’t much of a witchcraft community online, so I was shocked when I found so many others like me and so many people that loved what I was designing for them.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Hell no! First off coming from performing arts, the transition into design and how to develop that skill was intimidating. Having the audacity to think what I was making was “good enough” or feeling like a legitimate artist in that regard took some time since that wasn’t really a creative outlet I’d exercised. I lost friendships starting this business. You really learn who people are when business gets mixed into friendships. I don’t recommend mixing the two without specific boundaries or having established trust.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make fun, wearable, accessible, affirming things for witches. I want my customers to feel represented and seen whether they are out and proud about being a witch or are in the broom closet. I like to make subtle things as well as bold statements. The things I’m the most proud of s our Traveling Spell Space. It’s a blanket you can travel with or use and store away that is built as a circular ritual space. I’m really interested in tools that are functional. I try to bring witch aesthetic into products and spaces they are not currently in.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think my performing background honestly has helped me the most. I understand human nature, human connection, and am comfortable on camera. I am not shy and I’ve allowed people to get to know me. I care a lot about the witch community, and I think being authentic about it is what people are drawn to. The willingness to share myself and my passion. Everyone has their own unique advantage, it’s about finding what that is and using it in your marketing strategy. Especially if you are a small business owner. It’s getting harder and harder for us to hold people’s attention, and honestly I’m still figuring it out!
