Rising Stars: Meet Larry Brownstein

Today we’d like to introduce you to Larry Brownstein.

Hi Larry, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was an engineer who enjoyed traveling. While traveling around Asia with a friend who is a photographer, I began to enjoy photography. I kept traveling and taking photos and eventually began to get photos published. This was exciting to me and launched me toward taking photography more seriously. Eventually, I moved into portraiture and wedding photography as well as my travel photography.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have been a photographer since back in the day when they were still using this odd method of capturing images. They had plastic coated with light-sensitive chemicals that you put in your camera. They called it film. You had to bathe it in chemicals for the images to form, but amazing as it sounds, it worked.

Ironically, while digital capture is far better in many ways than film, it also created some problems for photographers. It turned everyone into a competitor and that put some pressure on fees.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
These days I focus mostly on my fine art photography that is exhibited in galleries and museums. I have exhibited widely around the US. I recently had some photographs in a group show at a museum. My fine art encompasses the urban and social landscape and also digital montage images that reference pop culture.

What does success mean to you?
I am lucky that I get to do something that I am genuinely interested in. I find that I continue to improve and refine my craftsmanship and my artistry. It’s nice to know that what I do is uniquely mine.
