Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Lau
Hi Kimberly, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey has been one of transformation, driven by both professional and personal passions. I spent 24 years in wealth management, where I enjoyed a successful career, but as a parent, I began to feel a deeper calling to make a lasting impact on future generations. Inspired by my stylish and giving grandmother, who instilled in me a love for fashion and giving back, I knew I wanted to create something meaningful.
That’s how Project Rewear came to life. It merges my passion for fashion with a strong commitment to sustainability. By focusing on preloved kids’ clothing, I aim to show parents that we can reduce waste, conserve resources, and still dress our children in stylish, high-quality pieces. It’s a mission I’m proud to pursue, as I not only work to leave a better planet for my children, but to inspire others to make more thoughtful, compassionate choices in their own lives.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Kids grow out of their clothes so quickly, and unfortunately, so many beautiful items end up as textile waste in our landfills. By choosing preloved clothing, we’re not only keeping clothes out of landfills, but we are also reducing our carbon footprint and conserving a critical resource—water. A lot of people don’t realize it takes around 2,700 liters of water just to produce a single cotton t-shirt. That’s equivalent to around 900 days of drinking water for one individual.
We recently held our first fashion show, and having Project Rewear featured on KTLA’s “Back to School” segment was a major milestone for us. Like any journey, there have been challenges, but honestly, the experience has been far smoother and more rewarding than I could have imagined. I was also fortunate to take part in a Social Impact Accelerator Course on the University of Pennsylvania campus, which further strengthened my passion for making a positive difference. When you truly believe in your mission and the impact it can have, even obstacles feel like opportunities to grow.
I’ve been incredibly lucky to have such a supportive network around me—people who believe in Project Rewear’s mission as much as I do. Recently, I brought on a new business partner, Linda Young, who shares the same passion for what we’re building. Having this support has made the journey forward not only manageable, but genuinely exciting. It’s inspiring to see so many people dedicated to making more sustainable choices, and with this amazing community behind me, I’m more motivated than ever to keep pushing ahead.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I launched Project Rewear earlier this year to inspire sustainable practices in kids’ fashion. As a mom, my kids are my biggest supporters, and this December, we’re excited to open our first location, offering a carefully curated selection of preloved clothing for both kids and parents. To give everyone a sneak peek of our handpicked and styled outfits, we have launched our very first Halloween Costume Pop-Up Shop in our new location, featuring a fantastic collection of preloved personally curated costumes in like-new condition that were purchased across southern California thrift stores. The Pop-Up will run through Wednesday, October 30th during the following hours: Monday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m Tuesday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Friday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m , located at 2940-C E. Thousand Oaks Blvd, Thousand Oaks, CA 91362.
Project Rewear’s mission is to encourage sustainable choices in kids’ fashion and beyond. By opting for preloved clothing, parents can make a real difference for the planet. We’re committed to offering high-quality, stylish items that are affordable, eco-friendly, and by doing so, we greatly reduce textile waste. It’s all about making a positive impact, one saved article of clothing at a time, which reduces our carbon footprint – greatly!
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One of the most important lessons that I’ve learned is that when you follow your passion and stay true to your purpose, everything else falls into place. The journey may not always be predictable, but taking that first step opens up possibilities you might not have imagined at the onset. I’ve also realized just how much of an impact we can make when we come together to do something good. The support from others has shown me that people are more willing to help and embrace positive change than we sometimes expect.
