Today we’d like to introduce you to Katy Rose.
Hi Katy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was essentially born on tour. My parents were two East Coast kids who ran away to LA to join the folk/rock Laurel Canyon scene. They met playing in bands together! Music and art were always paramount while I was growing up. I began writing my own songs and recording them when I was about 11 or so, starting my first all-girl punk band (RUBY RED SLIPPER) around that time too. By the time I was 14, I’d signed a 7-record contract at a major record label in NYC and had left home to become a recording artist and go on tour. The rest is history, really.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Was it easy? No! Hahah. Does anyone say “YES” to this question?
Essentially, I had gigantic success in my career before I was able to grow into that success. It became difficult to assess who I was apart from my stage or artistic persona, and that made the certain lows of the music business so much more crushing. I was such a bold and driven kid, but I was just that… a kid! While my peers were in high school, I was on tour with my band in Japan and Europe… Indonesia and Australia. I was working hard. Despite my proclivity for self-sabotage and destructive action at that time, I was extremely focused on my work. My work and how hard I work has always been intrinsically wound with my feelings of self-worth… and I am actively still working on that. 😉
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a songwriter and recording artist who has gone by the name of “Katy Rose” since about 2002. I think people in my age group have a lot of fond nostalgia for my early work b/c I was on MTV and had a lot of my songs picked up for big, timestamped films and TV like “MEAN GIRLS” and “The OC.” I was a part of pop culture in the 2000s very much, and I find that very special. I feel a deep connection with my fans. We really have grown up together.
I work as a producer in a very unique studio in Los Angeles now. Currently, I am co-writing/producing albums for three brilliant up and coming female artists I am very proud of.
I also started a 3-piece punk band out of LA with two genius female artists. We are called The Blushes! Follow us at @theblushesband if you’re interested in coming to a show to say hi! Working with women and starting this fresh project has given me wings.
I am also working on a book of punk poetry… 😉
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
If you are just starting out… I love you. You are so brave. Never forget why you started in the first place. Here is the most simple and straightforward advice I always give people…
Work Hard
Make Friends
Don’t Give Up
There is a very thin line between crazy and strong for any kind of longevity in this business. It’s going to be hard enough… don’t beat yourself up. Stay positive. Take care of yourself. Have FUN.
