Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Alysha.
Hi Kat , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story feels like a long one; yet also short. I’ve been served me up with quite a few difficult trials in life and like many others I clawed and fought my way to find myself in a new city following my dreams, unaware of what they would grow and change into over time. A desert rat scurrying from Arizona, finding their way to Los Angeles, California. Through all of it though, that history is exactly what brought me here today and helped shape me into the person that I am.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Are any roads actually smooth? No matter how fresh the asphalt, I think there will always be a bump or two along its path no matter how big or small. Mine has maybe had a pothole or two or three or… Plenty. Reflecting on my ten years in Los Angeles I think two of the biggest ones were finding my community and battling with my mental health. The pandemic shined a floodlight on those two factors and really pushed me into both letting go of unhealthy habits and people and holding on tight to what brought forth joy and support.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As many others in this city, I am a wearer of many hats! I am an actor, producer, model, content creator, and pursuer of whatever new things I can teach myself along the way of being an artist and creator. A large thing I am known for online is my YouTube channel “Gallifrey Pals” (my Doctor Who fans out there understand that first half). This is a reaction channel I have been the producer and host of since the start of 2020. My friend Paula Deming and I (with the occasional appearance of other guests) sit down to watch and react to different media, usually TV shows. This involves us giving our very raw (usually emotional) reactions to media we’ve never seen while using both of our film and theatre knowledge to discuss in depth our perspectives as viewers. I think this has a tendency to set us apart from others as we don’t shy away from our opinions or voicing them (which on the internet can be a very difficult thing to do). Running this channel primarily on my own for as long as I have is something I hold great pride in and I look forward to its continuing growth.
I also do work with my good friends and their production company; Babes, A Production Company. Probably one of my favorite things to do is work with people who are motivated and ready to take the film industry head on. Having that be alongside my friends? An incredible feeling. It’s a powerhouse of a team founded by Jaden Lebel and Mashka Wolfe and I’m grateful for every opportunity to create with them. We recently successfully ran a crowdfunding campaign last year and shot our short film called “Sorry, My Cat is Sick.” Written by Melinda-Catherine Gross. It’s currently been running its course through several film festivals like Dances with Films and Atlanta Film Festival.
Lastly I feel it’s important to mention (if not already assumed) I am a huge nerd and that absolutely translates over into boardgames and TTRPGs; table top roll playing games like D&D. I have been incredibly grateful to do some work for Critical Role playtesting for their self published games Candela Obscura and more recently Daggerheart. Playing TTRPGs has been an incredibly special and satisfying way to channel my work as an artist and performer into games alongside friends doing what I love to do most; telling stories!
What’s next?
The future is a scary and yet incredibly exciting thought to ponder. The plan is to continue the growth of my channel and extend it to include more guests and different content. I want people to come to our channel feeling seen, heard, and know there is an open door to expand the way they see the world and the way we all interact with art and media. We’ve also had some incredible opportunities such as interviewing Billie Piper for the Doctor Who LA convention Gallifrey One and I hope to have more experiences like that come our way.
The biggest thing I am presently most excited about though is a project I am working on with a wonderfully creative and talented individual, Samuel Chaplain. The two of us are in the process of putting together what is called an “Actual Play.” This involves recording our gameplay sessions for a TTRPG campaign and we are currently using a system called “Kids on Bikes.” Right now Samuel is running these sessions for me as the sole player. Once we have some of those sessions stacked up we will be taking that content and writing scripts off of the gameplay to turn it into a spooky horror audio drama to be shared in a podcast format.
Additionally I’m exploring a new performance discipline, Commedia Dell’arte. One of my biggest dreams in life has always been to be a clown. It’s a type of performance that fascinates me and my experience crossing paths with it has always inspired a deep urge to not just be a part of it, but to express myself through it. I look forward to the big changes that will come along with challenging myself in these new ways as a performer.
