Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Kice.
Hi Karen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am born and raised in Reykjavik, Iceland. I moved to the US eight years ago. I am completely self-taught when it comes to sewing. I picked up a sewing machine 2013/2014 and just never stopped! I had never really sewn anything before. I absolutely fell in love with creating things I could wear and before I knew it, I was making clothes for friends and family too and now it’s what I do full time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course anything new has its ups and downs. I had a hard time in the beginning finding what lane I wanted to be in. At first, I was all over the place trying everything out! I remember making jeans and it was the most tedious thing and I only made that one pair til this day. I figured out I liked making dresses the most and made thousands of dresses.
It’s also hard to find a good team, I’ve been doing a lot myself for 7 years now and wearing a lot of hats like a lot of entrepreneurs do. I’m currently looking to create a team within my company to scale my brand to its fullest potential.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an artist first. I love to freestyle when it comes to fashion and creates what comes to me in the moment, that’s when I’m having the most fun! I’d say I’m known for statement pieces like gowns, dresses and red carpet outfits with a splash of street wear.
It’s so hard to pick what I’m most proud of! I’d say prom and wedding gowns as well as the Grammy outfit for Londynn B 2020.
One thing that sets me apart from a lot of other designers is that I sew everything myself.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck, I believe you have to work really hard to get what you want. When preparation meets opportunity combined with action is when magic happens!
