Rising Stars: Meet Kara Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Thomas.

Kara Thomas

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Kara Thomas, and I am a Los Angeles-based interior and jewelry designer.

My journey towards becoming a designer began in my childhood when my mom let me have full creative reins over my bedroom makeover every few years, allowing me to choose themes, paint colors, bedding, etc. The joy and confidence this experience sparked in me revealed my innate passion for design. Growing up surrounded by my mom’s enthusiasm for DIY projects and my dad’s talent for painting further nurtured my appreciation for creativity.

As I transitioned into adulthood, I found myself on the path to law school. However, a desire to break out of my comfort zone and explore my creative instincts prompted a reevaluation. The decision to move to Los Angeles from New Jersey in 2013 presented an opportunity for change. During this time, my mom undertook minor renovations at home, and I participated in the design process, which fueled my growing interest.

The pivotal moment occurred during my first visit to LA, where the city’s vibrant design scene and numerous high-end furniture showrooms captivated me. It was then that I realized interior design was a blossoming career, and this expanded my perception beyond the limited exposure I had to the term ‘interior designer’ through HGTV. This moment reshaped my career aspirations, leading me to embrace design as my true calling.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Moving across the country at the age of 22 with limited resources and even more limited access to funds undoubtedly presented significant challenges in my journey here. Stepping out of my comfort zone and navigating through uncertainty with unwavering faith demanded courage and tenacity. There were moments when doubts crept in, tempting me to pack my belongings and return to the East Coast, yet something within me urged me to persist, anchoring me to this new life for almost 11 years. Reflecting on the adversities faced along the way, I am grateful for the struggles that have shaped the woman I am today.

Navigating through Los Angeles, an expensive city where the allure of materialistic perfectionism looms large, proved to be particularly challenging. Unlike many in this city, I am not entrenched in the entertainment industry, which meant that building and maintaining a social circle required continuous effort and initiative rather than relying on professional connections.

Despite the hurdles, Los Angeles has been a transformative chapter in my life. It has not only heightened my awareness of the value of persistence and adaptability but has also cultivated a refined sense of hustle and femininity within me. This city has undeniably elevated my quality of life, enriching me with experiences and lessons that have left a mark on my journey through adulthood and a newfound independence.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I founded my full-service interior design firm, Studio KT, in 2019, where we focus on both comprehensive renovations and new builds where we are dedicated to transforming spaces into breathtaking works of art. Being a young, black designer in an industry predominantly characterized by maturity and whiteness has presented its share of challenges and moments of discouragement. However, I aspire to contribute to a shift in perception, proving that the black community is equally deserving and capable of enjoying the same luxuries as other demographics.

I am a trendsetter and an innovator. I pride myself on providing an immersive experience for all of my clients, where luxury is not just seen but felt, setting me apart in the home industry.

With a decade of experience in the design world, I’ve embarked on a journey that has not only taught me valuable lessons about myself but has also unveiled another passion—jewelry design. From childhood, I’ve been the girl adorned with accessories, turning every corner of my life into a canvas for self-expression, be it through posters, stickers, or an array of bracelets and necklaces.

This deep-seated fascination with accessorizing has paved the way for my latest venture. I am currently crafting a unique line specifically tailored for fashion-forward individuals who understand the power of accessories. Much like my design philosophy, these pieces will be bold, making a statement that resonates with the confident and expressive fashionista.

While I’m taking my time to ensure each piece is a true reflection of my vision, I’m thrilled at the prospect of sharing my designs with the world. This journey from home design to jewelry creation has been a natural progression, and I can’t wait to see where this exciting path leads me.

How do you define success?
Success is a deeply personal concept and is rooted in freedom for me, both financially and spiritually. The freedom to create from my inner child and have a well-balanced work/ personal life means everything to me. I want to continue to cultivate meaningful relationships, nurture my personal growth, and make a positive impact on my community.

Ultimately, success is about aligning one’s actions with their aspirations, leading to a sense of purpose and fulfillment in life. It’s about living authentically and pursuing goals that bring a sense of joy, regardless of external measures or societal expectations.
