Rising Stars: Meet Kana Lee of Hermosa Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kana Lee.

Kana, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Understanding and discovering human stories, connecting with people, and experiencing life’s mysteries and rhythms have frequently been the driving motivators of why I did/do certain things and make some of the bigger decisions that have led me to where I am today. I think the general through line has been curiosity and acceptance of my naïveté to be a power versus a weakness.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Are any life roads really that smooth? Mine have had its fair share of peaks and valleys. I’ve been fortunate to have a supportive community and family. So even when times were hard, from finding our footing as immigrants, to school bullying, recessions, job losses, losing friends, heartbreaks and so on when I reflect on the past decades, I can also see so much light in the struggle.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I live in the multitudes and am consistently switching hats.

As a registered associate marriage and family therapist and registered associate professional clinical counselor, I see individuals, couples, and teenagers who are looking for support with their life’s journeys. I lean on multiple modalities in psychotherapy to help clients navigate their paths towards finding more acceptance and understanding for themselves and the relationships they are in. From Psychodynamic, Depth, Jungian, Somatic, Mindfulness, ACT, and Narrative theories, my style is eclectic and integrative and very tailored. I’m proud and humbled by the work I get to do with clients because it’s a special honor to sit with people in their most vulnerable moments. We get to build a deep trust and relationship that is unique from all other connections and I don’t take that responsibility lightly.

Perhaps what sets me apart from others would be my lived experiences that I bring into the room that also informs the empathy and compassion I bring into the therapeutic relationship.

Outside of therapy, I run marketing for Kina, a financial technology company that’s building a credit card for parents to get more flexibility and ease, earn rewards on tuition expenses, and help teachers get more recognition and benefits. I’m very excited for what we’re building and feel lucky to get to work with a brilliant and wonderful team while highlighting some of the most important people in the lives of our children.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
At this point most people who know me are familiar with my former life as a commercial hip hop choreography dancer. I think they might be surprised at how snarky I can get with my sports commentary, how enchanted I can be by stories of Foucault and Socrates, and my fascination with life’s paradoxes.
