Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlyn Davis-Linton.
Hi Kaitlyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My mom inspired me to start at a young age as a model. She would take me on her photoshoots that were arranged at different locations throughout the year and I would be her personal assistant. It allowed me to see a lot of the behind-the-scenes action. As I got older, I started to participate in her photoshoots as a mother and daughter theme. It was not in my own interest that I became involved but because I was her daughter by default I did it to please her. Over time, I was able to move from being a personal assistant to becoming an independent model. Due to my independence, I was able to find out what I liked and didn’t like. As a result, I developed my own style and way of doing things that made me Kaitlyn.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
By no means has it been smooth, this industry can be cutthroat and very demanding with no results. With how black women are perceived in this industry, there is a certain body type, style, walk, attitude, and speech that is expected of me. Never taking into consideration what my background is, my culture, or my upbringing. We do not get to walk in and be as generic as someone that is non-black. This is where I went in, giving my full 200% and ending with a typical response of “thanks for coming but you don’t fit the description” or “ we are going in a different direction”. When knowing honestly when I was presented with requirements, I met every standard they required of me to achieve that position.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a fashion model and abstract artist. As for modeling, I do runway, in-studio photoshoots, headshots, and lingerie/boudoir currently. I have worked with LA fashion week, Mag Blacks magazine, French black magazine, CIE fashion magazine, and The model experience as a spokesmodel and other publications! Artistically, I work by pouring paint to create different types of abstract pieces. With pouring paint, you can apply many different colors simultaneously because the colors do not mix when they’re poured over each other. The result is an abstract, colorful, and unique artwork.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Never do it for the money, do it for the love of your passion for it. One thing I wish I knew is that I would have fallen in love with it over time. Knowing from the beginning that I would fall in love with it would have encouraged me to put in more effort. Don’t give up on what you love once you find it.
