Today we’d like to introduce you to Kailyn Owens.
Hi Kailyn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started in the entertainment industry with a passion for storytelling and performance. My journey began in theater and ComedySportz, where I developed my skills in improvisation and stage presence. From there, I explored background work, gaining firsthand experience on set and understanding the industry from the ground up.
At 18, I transitioned into modeling, which opened new doors and expanded my perspective on the business. Over time, I found myself drawn to casting and production, where I could help shape projects from behind the scenes. Through networking, persistence, and hands-on experience, I built my career working on various film, TV, and commercial projects, learning the ins and outs of the industry.
Today, I’ve expanded beyond casting into production coordination and creative development, collaborating with brands, independent filmmakers, and content creators to bring their visions to life. My goal has always been to create opportunities for diverse voices and ensure representation in media. Every challenge and success along the way has shaped my path, and I’m excited to see where the next steps lead.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. The entertainment industry is unpredictable, and building a career in casting and production has required resilience. Early on, I struggled to get my foot in the door—competing for roles in theater and background work, navigating the modeling world at 18, and later proving myself in casting and production.
One of the biggest challenges was my experience within the modeling community. While modeling opened doors for me, it also exposed me to unrealistic beauty standards, favoritism, and environments that often didn’t prioritize talent’s well-being. It also created unwanted sexualization from men, both within the industry and outside of it. Instead of being seen for my professionalism and skill, I often felt reduced to my appearance, which was frustrating and disheartening. I saw firsthand how models, especially those who didn’t fit a specific mold, were treated as replaceable rather than valued for their individuality. Those experiences made me realize how important it is to create safe and supportive spaces for talent.
That’s what led me to casting. I wanted to make sure actors, models, and performers felt comfortable with whom they were working with—something I didn’t always feel in my own early experiences. I wanted to be the kind of casting director who understands both the excitement and vulnerability that come with auditions and bookings.
Beyond that, freelancing in this industry has its struggles—financial instability, last-minute project cancellations, and industry gatekeeping. There were times I questioned if I should keep going, but my passion for storytelling and advocating for diverse talent kept me pushing forward. Every challenge has shaped me, and despite the struggles, I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a casting director and production coordinator specializing in connecting diverse, talented individuals with the right opportunities in film, TV, commercials, and digital content. My work extends beyond just finding talent—I create safe, inclusive spaces where performers feel valued and respected. I understand what it’s like to be on both sides of the industry, and that perspective shapes how I approach casting.
I’m known for my ability to bring authenticity to projects, whether it’s finding actors who truly embody a role or assembling a cast that reflects real diversity. My goal is always to elevate storytelling by ensuring the right people are in the right roles. I also thrive in fast-paced production environments, keeping projects organized and running smoothly.
One of my proudest moments was casting for major projects, including brand campaigns, music videos, and film productions, where I helped showcase underrepresented talent. Seeing the excitement on a performer’s face when they book a role or knowing I played a part in someone’s big break is incredibly rewarding.
What sets me apart is my genuine care for talent and my hands-on approach to casting. I don’t just see people as numbers or headshots—I take the time to understand their strengths, experiences, and aspirations. I also make sure my sets and audition spaces are professional but comfortable, reducing the intimidation factor that can come with this industry.
At the end of the day, I love telling stories through people—finding the perfect match between a role and an actor, and watching a project come to life because of the right casting choices.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was full of energy, creativity, and always on the move. I grew up in dance, training at Debbie Allen’s studio, which shaped my love for movement and expression. I was also on the drill team, which kept me disciplined and connected to a team.
When I wasn’t dancing, I was doing background work, bringing my fun, high-energy personality to every set. I loved to dance around a lot, whether I was at home, outside with friends, or anywhere music was playing. I also had a big creative side—I was really into arts and crafts and enjoyed anything that let me express myself.
I was pretty, playful, and always up for an adventure—riding bikes with my friends around the neighborhood, swimming every chance I got, and just being a kid who loved life. I was also goofy and full of personality, always making people laugh and talking a lot in class (but still super smart!).
Beyond that, I’ve always had a big heart for others. Even as a kid, I loved helping people feel good about themselves, whether it was hyping up my friends, being there for someone who needed support, or just spreading positive energy. I was very helpful and deeply thoughtful, with a natural drive to care for my community and be involved in group activities.
Looking back, all of these qualities—my creativity, my passion for movement, my sense of humor, and my love for people—have played a huge role in shaping who I am today.
