Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Sanchez.
Hi Justin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Justin Sanchez and I’m a musician for my band Box. I fell in love with music when I was a little kid and started playing guitar around middle school.
I was heavily into guitar and recording music by college. In 2014, I released a demo from my dorm room and since then called the band Box. Basically it was me learning how to write a song and record. Also during this time, I was playing in a couple other bands, utilizing those skills.
In 2017, I moved from Houston to Long Beach to be closer to my now wife, Christina. I played open mics in town to meet people and make new friends in a new city. Eventually I met a couple of bands in town and backed them up at shows as a guitar player or drummer. I even helped in some recording sessions at their studio.
When COVID-19 plagued the world, all the shows my bands were going to play got cancelled. Everyone was isolated and the ideas for recording remotely didn’t sit well with some members so we called it quits. Since then, I’ve come back to Box and recorded from my home like “the good ‘ol days”.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not entirely smooth. I think the hardest part was finding a community of musicians to play with. People with a relatively similar taste and willing to share and spend time with you and your ideas.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love making music so much and I try not to take it too seriously so that I continue to love it. The last thing I want is to stress out over it when at the end of the day is something that should be cathartic and expressive.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Seek these people out! Recently I found Andrea Stolpe on Tik Tok and she gives great songwriting advice. Try to collaborate as a songwriter or a musician in general. Seek communities with artists and music you’re interested in and E-mail or DM other artists to expand your network. Once the pandemic is over, attend local shows or open mics and meet people there. Hope that helps!
