Today we’d like to introduce you to Julián Juaquín.
Hi Julián, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I used to watch John Leguizamo and be so inspired. He was Colombian and my family is Colombian so it just made sense. I grew up in Queens, New York in a small bubble. I went to acting school and that bubble popped. I was free! I suddenly was hungry to know more about the world. Everything outside of my bubble seemed so interesting. Eclectic world music like “Putumayo” blends. There’s food aside from latin cooking? Don’t get me wrong I love latin cooking but man, I didn’t have sushi until I was 28! And theater on stage. They’re ain’t nothing like watching an actor bomb on stage for real. I was amazed. I saw a side of New York City I never knew existed. Acting is what brought me to Los Angeles and when I arrived here, I realized how big this world actually is and how hard you have to work in order to make something of it. LA has challenged me as an actor and has brought out the best of me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My biggest obstacle has been me getting out of my own way. Taking responsibility for my life and my actions and at the same time recognize the exciting risks that are worth taking. Stop being a sucker. It’s crazy how many excuses I can make for not doing something and not realize that they are excuses. But once I recognized that the only thing that stopped me from creating what I wanted was me, sky was the limit!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I consider myself an actor first. I’ve worked on the NBC show “Stumptown” and even filmed a movie in South Korea with the famous Korean actor Ha Jung-woo. I also acted in a film that was just released on Amazon called “Respite” which I also produced. So I also consider myself a filmmaker.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I work with a production company called “Acme” developing their projects and visual stories. I’m currently developing a film I wrote about a screenwriter dealing with writer’s block. I am excited to introduce this story to the business. And I’m developing a one man show about growing up in NewYork. It talks about race, my Neighborhood and getting out of my way.
