Rising Stars: Meet Jordan Walker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Walker.

Hi Jordan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a hairdresser here in the valley, it’s a great and rewarding industry to be in. I grew up in Orange County in a very close family, my parents being my best friends my whole life. I had met my boyfriend in Los Angeles and ended up moving here and around three years ago, I was feeling like I needed to get serious about making some career moves as being with him I was starting to picture my future and a family of my own one day. My mother had already at this point undergone twice major heart surgeries and after a stroke from the first operation, I had often been the one to color or style her hair. My joy for this art form had grown more and had started to align with my new goal to create a career for myself. I had signed up for cosmetology school in 2017 and it was more challenging than I had expected time wise, being there full-time Monday through Friday 9-5:30 it was hard to do that and make enough money to pay my bills but I knew the end goal was worth it. Seeing my family took a little bit of a loss that year since I was so busy and this really impacted me looking back at how I managed that time when my dad was in a sudden car accident in March of 2018 while I was still finishing school. He didn’t make it, and my life changed forever. I had two choices, either drop out and take time to heal or power through it and make him proud so I can get out and that’s what I did. I got as many hours taking extra classes as I could and did an externship with the salon I am currently working at today to get ahead.

After this I assisted in a nice salon, left there and moved on to styling at Ulta to have more experience behind the chair, got my momentum back and then boom my mom died January 20, 2019. She had complications after a major heart surgery. I’ve since then taken on a bigger role in my siblings lives, as they’ve done for me. And while it hasn’t been easy, we’ve encouraged each other to stay on the right path and make something of ourselves and if ever we feel like it’s too hard we have each other to lean on. I am grateful for the love my parents have instilled in us and the work ethic we’ve built. But even more, I take away from this an appreciation for humanity, for humility, for the fragile and beautiful life we are all blessed to live. I see the importance and insignificance that is so often misplaced in all of our lives and I’ve tried and am still trying to implement where importance should really be held to create the life I want. I currently work at Dylan Keith salon where I originally did my externship when I was in school, for an amazing and powerhouse of a boss, my clients keep me feeling truly in love with this job and getting to bounce our life experiences off each other sometimes is really healing and special, and my siblings keep me motivated to live a balanced life that is focused on making time for the right things and creating the happiness we should all make priority.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not smooth, in every way possible it’s been bumpy. Losing both your parents before you’re even 26 is rough, the pain I feel for my younger brother losing them even sooner than me, the financial effects that took place, the need to motivate myself to stay focused, the list goes on and on. But when devastation like loss occurs, and inevitably it will to us all, we can allow it to swallow us whole or we can learn and grow through that pain. I’m confident they’d be proud of me, and that gives me joy. I’m comfortable in what I’ve done for myself, and that gives me peace. It’s really strange how things come full circle, everything I do is motivated by family and in the end, I lost a lot of people so early, but I know it was meant to be this way for a reason and I just have to pour their lessons and love into the work that I do.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a hairstylist! I love creative color, I specialize in blondes and hair extensions. Hair extensions are a huge passion project for me and we will be offering courses for it at the salon soon! I am master certified in six techniques and feel like it can give a client confidence in a way I’ve never experienced in any other service. I also cut hair, I do brow tint and lamination, and I have recently extended my education by learning gel-X nail application and eyelash extensions. I will always practice and take more courses to see you what more I can offer. I really want to make women feel beautiful and good so we can spend less time worrying about those simple things and enjoy our lives.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My family and I used to do so much together, my mom was super sweet and my dad super outgoing. They would take us on adventures all the time from camping trips to ride our dirt bikes (where we’d often break down on the mountain), to Disneyland on a school day, to pitching tents in the living room and having a big sleepover just for fun. They were the best. But I think my favorite thing that I miss the most was just all being together at the end of the night, watching movies together laughing.
