Rising Stars: Meet John Goolsby

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Goolsby.

Hi John, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Many kids are assigned a job in elementary school such as chalkboard monitor or line leader…in sixth grade, I was in charge of operating the 16mm film projector for the entire elementary school. Enjoyed taking a photography class in high school and teaching the video class instructor. Started bagging groceries in a supermarket at age 16 and was managing by age 22 and soon realized that my true passion was telling stories with video. Since starting my video business in 1986, I’ve gone on to film more than 3500 documentaries and events in 27 countries and 33 states…so far…

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Never any overwhelming struggles but keeping employees busy during economic downturns was always a concern but fortunately we never had to lay anybody off. I am convinced that dedicating time to learning new creative techniques and staying current with technology and social media has kept us relevant to our customers.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We all have certain gifts and need to identify and improve them. I’ve always been good at connecting the dots and understanding human emotion and personal motivation. This has helped us immensely when producing marketing films by knowing it is more than bells and whistles that motivate clients. The why is just as important as the what. After defining the communication goal, we can identify how to achieve it and ignore elements that only cloud the message. At social events, we look for unique moments that have emotional impact. For example, like every wedding videographer, we will have a camera on the bride walking down the aisle, but we also have a camera on the mother of the groom who will always look at her son during this moment and her eyes will fill with emotion.

Any big plans?
Video is everywhere now which presents unlimited opportunities for storytellers. We love love love working for clients who make a difference. Working for non-profits, hospitals, schools and charities are the most rewarding. We plan to do more of that.
