Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe La Barbera.
Hi Joe, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was taught drums, clarinet and saxophone by my father starting at age five and was part of a family band which includes two older brothers, Pat and John, both well-known professionals.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There are always struggles but in the end worth it. Trying to break in in New York City, working low-paying jobs, endless nights away from home.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have been a professional jazz musician since 1968 and my resume reads like a “Who’s Who” for that genre. I am most proud of my brother’s success and all the friendships that we have created through music. I always listen to others while performing.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
So many, it’s hard to pick just one. We did everything as a family including music and scouting. Just thinking of my family in any era is a great memory.
