Rising Stars: Meet Jessica Palermo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Palermo.

Hi Jessica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Henderson, NV and currently reside in Los Feliz with my partner and three children. After studying Art History and Gender Studies at the University of California, Berkeley I went on to spend the next 10 years as a footwear designer. Parenthood, priorities, & a pandemic incited the long overdue transition to art-making full-time. A late bloomer to the art world, I am now in my studio in East Hollywood as much as my schedule will allow.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I suppose that I was my own obstacle up until now. The concept of making art as a profession was never one that felt feasible to me as a young person, so I felt that design would scratch that itch. It never did, and making the decision to risk starting over later in life was a difficult one.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a painter and work primarily in oils. My work is very process driven and a product of both reflection and circumstance. The paintings are infused with a confessional narrative that move through mood and memory; exploring feelings attached to defining life events and their inevitable transience. Motherhood, womanhood, and sexuality are some recurring themes that suggest the fundamental human process of erasure and reinvention. Making art as a parent is a wonderful yet tricky thing. The pull to the home and pull to the work is in a constant state of flux and hopefully, each space is better for it.

My most recent group shows include Collarworks (Troy, NY) and Quarters Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), among others. I’ve been included in exhibitions curated by Emma Gray and Judith Ann Braun, both of whom I really admire.

Any big plans?
I don’t ever want to jinx anything, but a solo show this summer in London is in the works.
