Rising Stars: Meet Jay$hawn of Long Beach Ca

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay$hawn

Hi Jay$hawn , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I always used to joke about being a rapper/artist back in high school I used to do funny freestyles and just play around with rapping, after graduating I was working 2 jobs and barely had time for anything but the passionate for music still burned deep in my heart, I used to tell my family “I’m going to be a rapper!”, and of course they would laugh and not take me serious. It wasn’t until 2020 during the pandemic where I really told myself I’m going to tell my story through music, so I hooked up with a co-worker who had a studio and I began to write my first single titled “Popular Loner “ which I came out with in late 2021. Music had always got me through tough times and was like a safe haven for me I never really expressed what I was going through to anyone but the artist I would listen to kind of told the stories for me so this motivated me to express my struggles and feelings through music and now fast forward to 2024 I haven’t stopped making music since and currently have two new projects on the way titled “Organic” and “Humble But Not Average” which are both EP’s. Music is has become more like therapy for me now.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the beginning making music was very hard for me because I didn’t know much about how to make music and how to put it out and sitting down and trying to put my thoughts on paper was always hard, but as I practiced it more and more the easier it came. Now I’m at a point where I kind of still get stuck but I just push through and I’m learning more of the business side of music now like promo and how to reach broader audiences. Making music and releasing it has become much easier I just need to work on staying consistent and engaging with my fans more at this point.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Right now I wear many different hats but I want to turn music into my 9-5, that’s the goal, but I do a pleather of other things like electrical engineering and running a used auto dealership on the side. These are just a couple things I do to fuel my dream which is to be a full time artist. In the midst of doing other things I am always making music and trying find time for the studio when I can. Right now I am most proud of my improvement in making music, I feel like each drop gets better and better each time. I feel like my versatility sets me apart from my peers, being that I lived in Georgia and LA for certain parts of my life gave me a different sound and different beat selection from your typical LA artist.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In 5 years I see my self becoming a bigger artist and reaching a broader audience, I see myself being more recognized for what I bring to the hip hop culture in my city.
